Book Description
Excerpt from American Journal of Dental Science, 1900 The principles involved in the treatment of caries occurring on the approximal surfaces of bicuspids are so similar to those occurring on like surfaces of molars that they will be considered as one class of cavities. Minor differences in the detail of the work will, it is true, be called for, but these are readily suggested by the differ emees in the forms of the teeth. The position and function of bicuspids and molars are nearly identical, and they are subject to practically the same influences leading to decay primarily and to a recurrence of decay around fillings. The same forces are at work to dislodge fillings, and the same general plan of anchorage must be pursued in the one as in the other. For these reasons they. Are treated in common. Book Description
Excerpt from American Journal of Dental Science, Vol. 29: Baltimore, May, 1895 Not many weeks ago a patient came to me with neuralgia, which had continuously destroyed her rest for nearly three weeks previously. She had all this time been under the care of one of those kind of dentists, had a num ber of fillings inserted, such as they were, and one good tooth extracted from the left side of the mouth, hoping thereby to relieve the pain in the nerves of the face on the right side. How is that for science I found an exposed and badly inflamed pulp in a bicuspid on the right side, each side of which the operator had inserted fillings, care fully avoiding this tooth. Telling the patient it was a dead tooth. I saved the tooth and made it useful, but sacrificed the pulp. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Journal of Dental Science, 1851, Vol. 2 I deny, positively, the truth of the statement so often made, that caries of the teeth will always continue to progress, after it has once set in, unless every particle of the decayed bone be removed from contact with that which is healthy. I do not believe that, when the cavity of decay is so filled, as absolutely to prevent ingress of the fluids of the mouth, that the disease ever advances; although my observations upon this point are not sufficient to furnish me with decisive proof that it is so. But I do affirm, with confidence, that a series of observations, running through a practice of ten years, have convinced me that in a vast majority of cases, caries of the teeth remains station ary, if the opening of the cavity of decay is well prepared and the cavity so filled as to exclude every thing from it, although decayed, dead and decomposed bone be left in it.
