Book Description
Excerpt from The American Journal of Dental Science, 1851, Vol. 2 I deny, positively, the truth of the statement so often made, that caries of the teeth will always continue to progress, after it has once set in, unless every particle of the decayed bone be removed from contact with that which is healthy. I do not believe that, when the cavity of decay is so filled, as absolutely to prevent ingress of the fluids of the mouth, that the disease ever advances; although my observations upon this point are not sufficient to furnish me with decisive proof that it is so. But I do affirm, with confidence, that a series of observations, running through a practice of ten years, have convinced me that in a vast majority of cases, caries of the teeth remains station ary, if the opening of the cavity of decay is well prepared and the cavity so filled as to exclude every thing from it, although decayed, dead and decomposed bone be left in it. Book Description
Excerpt from The Dental Times, 1865, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science I refuse to operate in all cases where the will of my patient is to interfere with my freedom in cutting away dead portions Of enamel, as much as may be necessary to secure firm healthy borders, and to make enduring fillings. I am, perhaps, more lavish in the use of my cutting instruments than many eminent Operators, but the result of more than one hundred thousand fillings sustains and justifies my practice. The fears that the plugs will be seen must be dismissed by the patient, and disregarded by the opera tor, if the safety Of the tooth is the end sought. In the incisors, especially, is firmness in this matter required, and young Operators are Often found yielding to the prejudices of the wrong directed judgment of their unin formed patrons; and it is only in after years, when the teeth are hope lessly crumbled away, that both learn their mistake.
