Book Description
A broad and growing literature describes the deep and multidisciplinary nature of the sustainability challenges faced by the United States and the world. Despite the profound technical challenges involved, sustainability is not, at its root, a technical problem, nor will merely technical solutions be sufficient. Instead, deep economic, political, and cultural adjustments will ultimately be required, along with a major, long-term commitment in each sphere to deploy the requisite technical solutions at scale. Nevertheless, technological advances and enablers have a clear role in supporting such change, and information technology (IT) is a natural bridge between technical and social solutions because it can offer improved communication and transparency for fostering the necessary economic, political, and cultural adjustments. Moreover, IT is at the heart of nearly every large-scale socioeconomic system-including systems for finance, manufacturing, and the generation and distribution of energy-and so sustainability-focused changes in those systems are inextricably linked with advances in IT. The focus of Computing Research for Sustainability is "greening through IT," the application of computing to promote sustainability broadly. The aim of this report is twofold: to shine a spotlight on areas where IT innovation and computer science (CS) research can help, and to urge the computing research community to bring its approaches and methodologies to bear on these pressing global challenges. Computing Research for Sustainability focuses on addressing medium- and long-term challenges in a way that would have significant, measurable impact. The findings and recommended principles of the Committee on Computing Research for Environmental and Societal Sustainability concern four areas: (1) the relevance of IT and CS to sustainability; (2) the value of the CS approach to problem solving, particularly as it pertains to sustainability challenges; (3) key CS research areas; and (4) strategy and pragmatic approaches for CS research on sustainability.

ICT Innovations for Sustainability

ICT Innovations for Sustainability PDF Author: Lorenz M. Hilty
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319092286
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 474

Book Description
ICT Innovations for Sustainability is an investigation of how information and communication technology can contribute to sustainable development. It presents clear definitions of sustainability, suggesting conceptual frameworks for the positive and negative effects of ICT on sustainable development. It reviews methods of assessing the direct and indirect impact of ICT systems on energy and materials demand, and examines the results of such assessments. In addition, it investigates ICT-based approaches to supporting sustainable patterns of production and consumption, analyzing them at various levels of abstraction – from end-user devices, Internet infrastructure, user behavior, and social practices to macro-economic indicators. Combining approaches from Computer Science, Information Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, Economics, and Environmental Sciences, the book presents a new, holistic perspective on ICT for Sustainability (ICT4S). It is an indispensable resource for anyone working in the area of ICT for Energy Efficiency, Life Cycle Assessment of ICT, Green IT, Green Information Systems, Environmental Informatics, Energy Informatics, Sustainable HCI, or Computational Sustainability.

Green Information Technology

Green Information Technology PDF Author: Mohammad Dastbaz

Book Description
We are living in the era of "Big Data" and the computing power required to deal with "Big Data" both in terms of its energy consumption and technical complexity is one of the key areas of research and development. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that centralized computing infrastructures (data centres) currently use 7 giga watts of electricity during peak loads. This translates into about 61 billion kilowatt hours of electricity used. By the EPA’s estimates, power-hungry data centres consume the annual output of 15 average-sized power plants. One of the top constraints to increasing computing power, besides the ability to cool, is simply delivering enough power to a given physical space. Green Information Technology: A Sustainable Approach offers in a single volume a broad collection of practical techniques and methodologies for designing, building and implementing a green technology strategy in any large enterprise environment, which up until now has been scattered in difficult-to-find scholarly resources. Included here is the latest information on emerging technologies and their environmental impact, how to effectively measure sustainability, discussions on sustainable hardware and software design, as well as how to use big data and cloud computing to drive efficiencies and establish a framework for sustainability in the information technology infrastructure. Written by recognized experts in both academia and industry, Green Information Technology: A Sustainable Approach is a must-have guide for researchers, computer architects, computer engineers and IT professionals with an interest in greater efficiency with less environmental impact. Introduces the concept of using green procurement and supply chain programs in the IT infrastructure. Discusses how to use big data to drive efficiencies and establish a framework for sustainability in the information technology infrastructure. Explains how cloud computing can be used to consolidate corporate IT environments using large-scale shared infrastructure reducing the overall environmental impact and unlocking new efficiencies. Provides specific use cases for Green IT such as data center energy efficiency and cloud computing sustainability and risk.

Pervasive Computing Design for Sustainability

Pervasive Computing Design for Sustainability PDF Author: Håkan Gulliksson
Publisher: Videoiterna
ISBN: 919802809X
Category : Computers

Book Description
This book contains the knowledge an interaction designer should know about pervasive design for sustainability. Relevant design research is discussed and framed in a story and value based participatory approach. Sustainability is the most important design goal. This is the first message. A second message is that information technologies, and in particular pervasive computing are invaluable keys in the quest for sustainability. Thirdly there is a lack of knowledge on sustainability issues in the interaction design community. In this book a unique meta-level framework structures an extensive discussion of design for sustainability. The framework is based on a principle of justice that is complemented by circumstances for sustainability chosen from the perspective of interaction design. We suggest and present the following circumstances: limited shared resources, socio-technical components and structures, technology development, vision and reflection, cognitive and behavioural support, joint ventures and political action. Topics discussed within the circumstances include experience design, ethics, Latours’s modes of existence, design fiction, computer games, futures studies, theories for reflection and behavioural change, personal informatics, and practice theory. The convolute concludes with a number of case studies where interaction design research is summarized and studied from the perspective of sustainability. We start out with thoughts on sustainable consumption, sustainable character, and the sustainable family that gets a section each. Adding to them are annotated case studies from research on design fiction, game and performance, value based design, practice theory, multi-level perspective design and design for a sustainable society. The book is a polyphonic convolute which means that there will be some overlap in the reports from the different discourses. Development in the areas related to interaction design can be sensed by identifying the surfacing themes. In total the e-book consists of the equivalence of 530 pages excluding references and index. Håkan Gulliksson is a lecturer on Interaction technology and Sustainable design at Umeå University for more than ten years.
