Computers in Fisheries Research

Computers in Fisheries Research PDF Author: Bernard A. Megrey
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402086369
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 427

Book Description
The first edition of this book was published by Chapman and Hall Ltd. in 1996. The first edition contained nine chapters and, for all except one chapter, the original chapter authors agreed to update their chapter. Comparing these chapters gives the reader an idea of the development over a time span of more than 10 years between the two editions. In the preparation of the second edition we decided to add more chapters reflecting some important fields with significant contributions to present day fishery research. These are the use of internet for searching of information (Chapter 2), and the present state and use of remote sensing (Chapter 5), ecosystem modeling (Chapter 8) and visualization of data (Chapter 10). This second edition provides a valuable sampling of contemporary applications. Scientists have an opportunity to evaluate the suitability of different computer technology applications to their particular research situation thereby taking advantage of the experience of others. The chapters that follow are the fruition of this idea. The history behind this book started in 1989 when we were asked by Dr. Vidar Wespestad (previously: Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Seattle, USA) to prepare and convene a session at the 1992 World Fishery Congress in Athens, Greece on computer applications in fisheries. We agreed that the idea was a good one and the computer session in 1992 turned out to be very successful.

African Water Resource Database: Concepts and application case studies. Spatial analysis for inland aquatic resource management

African Water Resource Database: Concepts and application case studies. Spatial analysis for inland aquatic resource management PDF Author: Jeff Jenness
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9789251057407
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
The African Water Resource Database (AWRD) is a set of data and custom-designed tools, combined in a geographic information system (GIS) analytical framework, aimed at facilitating responsible inland aquatic resource management with a focus on inland fisheries and aquaculture. It thus provides a valuable instrument to promote food security. The AWRD data archive includes an extensive collection of datasets covering the African continent, including: surface waterbodies, watersheds, aquatic species, rivers, political boundaries, population density, soils, satellite imagery and many other physiographic and climatological data. This technical paper is the first of two publications about the AWRD, and it gives a general overview addressed both to administrators and managers, as well as for professionals in technical fields. The second part of this technical paper is available separately (ISBN 9789251056479).

Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing and Mapping for the Development and Management of Marine Aquaculture

Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing and Mapping for the Development and Management of Marine Aquaculture PDF Author: James M. Kapetsky
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9789251056462
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
The objective of this document is to illustrate the ways in which Geographical Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and mapping can play a role in the development and management of marine aquaculture. The perspective is global. The approach is to employ example applications that have been aimed at resolving many of the important issues in marine aquaculture. The underlying purpose is to stimulate the interest of individuals in the government, industry and educational sectors of marine aquaculture to make more effective use of these tools. A brief introduction to spatial tools and their use in the marine fisheries sector precedes the example applications. The most recent applications have been selected to be indicative of the state of the art, allowing readers to make their own assessments of the benefits and limitations of use of these tools in their own disciplines. Also published in Chinese and Spanish.

Biodiversity in Enclosed Seas and Artificial Marine Habitats

Biodiversity in Enclosed Seas and Artificial Marine Habitats PDF Author: G. Relini
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402061560
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
The main themes of the Symposium were biodiversity in enclosed and semi-enclosed seas and artificial habitats, and the restoration of degraded systems. These themes are highly relevant today. The papers dealing with the first theme represent current research and concerns about marine biodiversity in enclosed seas. The papers in the second theme represent a synthesis of up-to-date knowledge on artificial habitats.
