Harmonic Analysis and Applications

Harmonic Analysis and Applications PDF Author: Carlos E. Kenig
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1470461277
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 345

Book Description
The origins of the harmonic analysis go back to an ingenious idea of Fourier that any reasonable function can be represented as an infinite linear combination of sines and cosines. Today's harmonic analysis incorporates the elements of geometric measure theory, number theory, probability, and has countless applications from data analysis to image recognition and from the study of sound and vibrations to the cutting edge of contemporary physics. The present volume is based on lectures presented at the summer school on Harmonic Analysis. These notes give fresh, concise, and high-level introductions to recent developments in the field, often with new arguments not found elsewhere. The volume will be of use both to graduate students seeking to enter the field and to senior researchers wishing to keep up with current developments.

Geometric and Harmonic Analysis on Homogeneous Spaces

Geometric and Harmonic Analysis on Homogeneous Spaces PDF Author: Ali Baklouti
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030265625
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
This book presents a number of important contributions focusing on harmonic analysis and representation theory of Lie groups. All were originally presented at the 5th Tunisian–Japanese conference “Geometric and Harmonic Analysis on Homogeneous Spaces and Applications”, which was held at Mahdia in Tunisia from 17 to 21 December 2017 and was dedicated to the memory of the brilliant Tunisian mathematician Majdi Ben Halima. The peer-reviewed contributions selected for publication have been modified and are, without exception, of a standard equivalent to that in leading mathematical periodicals. Highlighting the close links between group representation theory and harmonic analysis on homogeneous spaces and numerous mathematical areas, such as number theory, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, operator algebra, partial differential equations and mathematical physics, the book is intended for researchers and students working in the area of commutative and non-commutative harmonic analysis as well as group representations.

Geometric Analysis

Geometric Analysis PDF Author: Eric Grinberg
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821851535
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 167

Book Description
This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the Special Session on Geometric Analysis held at the AMS meeting in Philadelphia in October 1991. The term ``geometric analysis'' is being used with increasing frequency in the mathematical community, but its meaning is not entirely fixed. The papers in this collection should help to better define the notion of geometric analysis by illustrating emerging trends in the subject. The topics covered range over a broad spectrum: integral geometry, Radon transforms, geometric inequalities, microlocal analysis, harmonic analysis, analysis on Lie groups and symmetric spaces, and more. Containing articles varying from the expository to the technical, this book presents the latest results in a broad range of analytic and geometric topics.

Geometric Analysis and Function Spaces

Geometric Analysis and Function Spaces PDF Author: Steven George Krantz
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 9780821889251
Category : Mathematics

Book Description
Approach your problems from the right It isn't that they can't see the solution. It end and begin with the answers. Then, is that they can't see the problem. one day, perhaps you will fmd the final question. G. K. Chesterton, The Scandal of Father Brown 'The Point of a Pin'. 'The Hermit Clad in Crane Feathers' in R. Van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the 'tree' of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geo metry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical progmmming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to fIltering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces.

Mathematics and Music

Mathematics and Music PDF Author: James S. Walker
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439867097
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
At first glance, mathematics and music seem to be from separate worlds—one from science, one from art. But in fact, the connections between the two go back thousands of years, such as Pythagoras’s ideas about how to quantify changes of pitch for musical tones (musical intervals). Mathematics and Music: Composition, Perception, and Performance explores the many links between mathematics and different genres of music, deepening students’ understanding of music through mathematics. In an accessible way, the text teaches the basics of reading music and explains how various patterns in music can be described with mathematics. The authors extensively use the powerful time-frequency method of spectrograms to analyze the sounds created in musical performance. Numerous examples of music notation assist students in understanding basic musical scores. The text also provides mathematical explanations for musical scales, harmony, and rhythm and includes a concise introduction to digital audio synthesis. Along with helping students master some fundamental mathematics, this book gives them a deeper appreciation of music by showing how music is informed by both its mathematical and aesthetic structures. Web Resource On the book’s CRC Press web page, students can access videos of many of the spectrograms discussed in the text as well as musical scores playable with the free music software MuseScore. An online bibliography offers many links to free downloadable articles on math and music. The web page also provides links to other websites related to math and music, including all the sites mentioned in the book.

Geometry of Harmonic Maps

Geometry of Harmonic Maps PDF Author: Yuanlong Xin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780817638207
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Harmonic maps are solutions to a natural geometrical variational prob lem. This notion grew out of essential notions in differential geometry, such as geodesics, minimal surfaces and harmonic functions. Harmonic maps are also closely related to holomorphic maps in several complex variables, to the theory of stochastic processes, to nonlinear field theory in theoretical physics, and to the theory of liquid crystals in materials science. During the past thirty years this subject has been developed extensively. The monograph is by no means intended to give a complete description of the theory of harmonic maps. For example, the book excludes a large part of the theory of harmonic maps from 2-dimensional domains, where the methods are quite different from those discussed here. The first chapter consists of introductory material. Several equivalent definitions of harmonic maps are described, and interesting examples are presented. Various important properties and formulas are derived. Among them are Bochner-type formula for the energy density and the second varia tional formula. This chapter serves not only as a basis for the later chapters, but also as a brief introduction to the theory. Chapter 2 is devoted to the conservation law of harmonic maps. Em phasis is placed on applications of conservation law to the mono tonicity formula and Liouville-type theorems.
