Book Description
Most New Testament (NT) introductions, because of page limitations and other reasons, tend to minimize their treatment of the last nine books of the Christian Bible (from Hebrews to Revelation). The focus in these introductions is often on the four Gospels and the Letters of Paul. As important as these books are, one should not neglect, with only a brief survey, the treatment of Hebrews, the General Letters, and the book of Revelation. The title given later to the collection--Catholic Epistles or General Letters--is a reminder of its general appeal to the whole church, despite its slow "canonical" recognition and authorship issues. Nevertheless, these writings from Hebrews to Revelation continue to capture our attention and ignite our imagination. My purpose for this book is to supplement my NT introduction and others like it with a focus on specific questions about each book from Hebrews to Revelation: -When and why was each book written? -By whom and to whom was each book written? -What are some special features of each book? -How soon (or late) was each book included in the NT collection? Answers to many of these questions are tentative. The "assured results of scholarship" are in continual need of reevaluation. Since the 1980s a host of diverse studies have emerged, and I have endeavored to include them when they are relevant to the discussion.

Pages : 256

Book Description
This commentary on the Hebrews, the General Epistles, and Revelation, excerpted from the Fortress Commentary on the Bible: The New Testament, engages readers in the work of biblical interpretation. Contributors connect historical-critical analysis with sensitivity to current theological, cultural, and interpretive issues. Introductory articles describe the challenges of reading the New Testament in ancient and contemporary contexts, as well as exploring other themes ranging from the Jewish heritage of early Christianity to the contexts of diaspora. These are followed by the survey “Introduction to Hebrews, the General Epistles, and Revelation.” Each chapter (Hebrews through Revelation) includes an introduction and commentary on the text through the lenses of three critical questions: The Text in Its Ancient Context. What did the text probably mean in its original historical and cultural context? The Text in the Interpretive Tradition. How have centuries of reading and interpreting shaped our understanding of the text? The Text in Contemporary Discussion. What are the unique challenges and interpretive questions that arise for readers and hearers of the text today? Book Description
The Bible is simply a love letter compiled into sixty-six books and written over a period ofsixteen hundred years by more than forty authors living on three continents. Although theauthors came from different backgrounds, there is one message, one theme, one thread that runs throughout the entire Bible from the first book, Genesis, to the last book, Revelation. That message is God's redeeming love for mankind--a message that is as relevant for us today as it was two thousand years ago.Other Letters (Hebrews, James, First Peter, Second Peter, First John, Second John, and Third John) were written over a period of approximately fifty years. The book of James was the earliest, penned between AD 46 and 49, and Revelation was the last to be recorded; it was written by the apostle John in AD 95 or 96. Most of these letters were written after the apostle Paul's death, and they carried on the Christian epistolary tradition. In contrast to many of Paul's writings, the General Epistles were written during the years of heavy Roman persecution of the Christian population. The content of some of these letters reflects this increasingly hostile environment. In addition, the spread and strength of false teachings was much greater than it was during the years that Paul wrote. This challenge to Christianity is also very evident in the content and tone of these last nine books of the New Testament.Of course, there could be no better capstone to the New Testament -- and, in fact, to the entire Bible -- than the book of Revelation. In it, God records His last words about the final days and the ultimate victory of His Son, the Lamb of God and the Lion of Judah.

Faithful to the End

Faithful to the End PDF Author: Terry L. Wilder

ISBN: 1433669803
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
In classroom and scholarly study, the Gospels, Acts, and the Pauline letters receive far more attention than does the so-called “end” of the New Testament: Hebrews; James; 1 and 2 Peter; 1, 2, and 3 John; Jude; and Revelation. Faithful to the End: An Introduction to Hebrews Through Revelation offers a careful study of these latter biblical letters, closely examining each one's authorship and origin, destination and audience, purpose, and major themes. Appropriate as a reference work or textbook in college and seminary classrooms, this volume uniquely combines head knowledge with a challenge to the heart, for it is purposefully titled after each book’s recurring theme of persevering in the faith. Coauthor Terry L. Wilder writes, “Our hope is that God might use this text to help readers not only learn about these New Testament books, but also to appropriate the message contained in each. May we be faithful to the end!”

The Mystery of the Hebrew Letters

The Mystery of the Hebrew Letters PDF Author: Reverend Maria Goldstein
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1635757819
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 102

Book Description
“Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in a garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?” (Proverbs 30:4). The answer to this riddle can be found in the revelation contained within this book. The Son’s identity, once concealed in the divine letters of the Hebrew alphabet... is now revealed! Yeshua said, “Before Abraham was, I am.” Messiah is also known as the Poretz, (the one who will break through). He was present from the beginning of time for the salvation of the world! Each Hebrew letter points to Jesus/Yeshua as the Messiah to all the nations of the world. The mystery of Messiah Yeshua was once hidden in the divine Hebrew letters and the Torah. This breakthrough information has been revealed for such a time as this. Yeshua said, “Repent for the Kingdom of God is near! “This book is a glimpse of Yeshua in the Hebrew Alpha-Bet. Yeshua said, “In the volume of the book it is written of me”. You are about to get a glimpse of Yeshua revealed in the Hebrew. For those not fluent in Hebrew, it is my hope that this book will pique your interest in learning our holy language. As a Jewish Rabbi and a believer in Yeshua the Messiah, I highly recommend Mystery of the Hebrew Letters to connect you to the Jewishness of Yeshua/Jesus. The Bible is a Jewish book from cover to cover and only in studying the Bible in Hebrew, its original language, will you begin to understand the richness of the Word of Elohim. As Christians, it’s time to reconnect to the Jewish Roots of our faith.” - Rabbi Deborah Brandt – Deborah’s Messianic Ministries-Beit Midrash Tefillah Hallel Congregation and Vice President and Instructor at The Judaic Studies Institute and University. “Dr. Maria Goldstein, THANK YOU for writing this incredible book. As a Hebrew Christian for 46 years, I have never read anything like this! It solves the mystery of the Hebrew alphabet and reveals Yeshua/Jesus as the Son of God. Many of my questions have finally been answered by this book, which I highly and enthusiastically recommend!” -Pastor Meyer Stahl- Southern New Mexico Church of God, author, founder, producer, TV and radio host of What is Truth? “The 22 sacred letters of the Hebrew language are profound and spiritual since the language spoken by God in the Bible is made up from these letters. By trying to understand God’s word we can learn even more by understanding the meaning of the letters that brought forth creation. Rev. Dr. Maria Goldstein does a wonderful job of revealing some of these mysteries and their relation to Messiah Yeshua.” Rabbi George Quinn Beth Israel Messianic Center, El Paso, TX "Hebrew is a constructive language, and as such, even the letters must be considered when determining the meaning of the words! A Jewish story goes as follows: When God asked Adam to name the animals, Adam so filled with the knowledge of the Hebrew letters was able to look at each creature and knew which letters God used to bring that creature into existence. Those letters then became the name that Adam gave to each creature. So Adam did not so much as name the animals as much as being filled with the knowledge of the letters, he knew the name God had already given them. Dr Goldstein's Mystery of the Hebrew Letter Jesus Revealed is a wonderful little gem conveying some key elementary points of each Hebrew letter. This primer should be taken as a first step into the larger world of understanding the very Word of God, the Bible." Rabbi Gary Hartshorn Las Cruces, NM
