Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma PDF Author: Timothy M. Pawlik
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030222586
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 215

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive review of the epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). It brings together an impressive group of international experts in cholangiocarcinoma research and clinical care. The book was organized and written to aid the clinician’s understanding of emerging research in cholangiocarcinoma and its application to the clinical care of patients with ICC. Each chapter details the scientific evidence to support clinical decisions that are needed to care for these complex patients. Focused chapters detail the epidemiology, diagnostic evaluation, as well as staging and prognosis of this disease. In addition to dedicated chapters on surgical management of ICC, a broad emphasis on locoregional therapies, including percutaneous ablation and transarterial therapies, is included. An up-to-date overview of the molecular pathogenesis and pathological assessment of ICC is detailed prior to chapters focusing on systemic chemotherapy and emerging novel therapy options. Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma is not only an invaluable resource for many as they seek to provide the best multidisciplinary cancer care to patients with ICC, but also an opportunity to identify new avenues of scientific discovery that lead to significant advances in the diagnosis and management of ICC.

Hepatobiliary Cancer

Hepatobiliary Cancer PDF Author: Paul H. Sugarbaker
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461526043
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
When one deals with cancer, the hepatobiliary malignancies present a chal lenge to the oncologists that can be characterized as a series of unsolved clinical and biological dilemmas. Liver metastases from colorectal and other gastrointestinal malignancies, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocar cinoma, and gall bladder cancer present an array of problems but have two features in common. These are high morbidity and mortality with an overall poor result from treatment. Why is it that hepatobiliary cancer carries with it such a dismal prognosis? First of all, these diseases present, for the most part, in an advanced state. To this point in time the oncologist has had no help from early diagnosis or screening. Only the occasional patient followed by ultrasound or a tumor marker has the disease diagnosed in an asymptomatic state. By the time these diseases become symptomatic, curative treatment options have usually disappeared. Evolution has placed the liver in a protected position in order to avoid injury to the soft parenchyma. As with many other internal organs, the nerve supply is extremely limited. These two anatomic features result in a great lack of early warning signs of cancer.

Perspective of tumor heterogeneity for treatments of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with intrahepatic lithiasis

Perspective of tumor heterogeneity for treatments of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with intrahepatic lithiasis PDF Author: Wenjie Hou
Publisher: OAE Publishing Inc.
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 5

Book Description
The heterogeneity of tumors results in significantly distinct biological characteristics of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) caused by different etiologies. Among them, ICC caused by intrahepatic lithiasis (IHL-ICC) presents challenges in early detection, tumor staging, and surgical treatment, and has the poorest prognosis among all etiologies of ICC patients. Thus, it is essential to focus on early assessment of the possibility of developing ICC, prompt intervention of intrahepatic lithiasis, anatomical resection of hepatic parenchyma corresponding to the branch of the intrahepatic bile duct undergoing cancerous transformation, and enhanced postoperative follow-up of hepatolithiasis and ICC for IHL-ICC patients. These interventions are crucial to improve the clinical outcomes and overall survival of IHL-ICC patients.
