Peyresq Lectures On Nonlinear Phenomena, Volume Ii PDF Author: Jacques-alexandre Sepulchre
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 981448573X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
This book is the second volume of lecture notes on various topics in nonlinear physics delivered by specialists in the field who gave courses in the small village of Peyresq (France) during summer schools (2000, 2001, 2002) organised by the Institut Non Linéaire de Nice (INLN), in collaboration with the Institut de Recherche de Physique Hors Equilibre (IRPHE). The goal is to provide good summaries on the state of the art of some domains in physics having the common denominator of belonging to nonlinear sciences, and to promote the transfer of knowledge between them.

Symmetry, Phase Modulation and Nonlinear Waves

Symmetry, Phase Modulation and Nonlinear Waves PDF Author: Thomas J. Bridges
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108101321
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
Nonlinear waves are pervasive in nature, but are often elusive when they are modelled and analysed. This book develops a natural approach to the problem based on phase modulation. It is both an elaboration of the use of phase modulation for the study of nonlinear waves and a compendium of background results in mathematics, such as Hamiltonian systems, symplectic geometry, conservation laws, Noether theory, Lagrangian field theory and analysis, all of which combine to generate the new theory of phase modulation. While the build-up of theory can be intensive, the resulting emergent partial differential equations are relatively simple. A key outcome of the theory is that the coefficients in the emergent modulation equations are universal and easy to calculate. This book gives several examples of the implications in the theory of fluid mechanics and points to a wide range of new applications.

Advances in Applied Mechanics

Advances in Applied Mechanics PDF Author: Erik van der Giessen
Publisher: Gulf Professional Publishing
ISBN: 9780120020393
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
The major developments in the field of fluid and solid mechanics are scattered throughout an array of scientific journals, making it often difficult to find what the real advances are, especially for a researcher new to the field. The Advances in Applied Mechanics book series draws together the recent significant advances in various topics in applied mechanics. Published since 1948, Advances in Applied Mechanics aims to provide authoritative review articles on topics in the mechanical sciences, primarily of interest to scientists and engineers working in the various branches of mechanics, but also of interest to the many who use the results of investigation in mechanics and various application areas. Advances in Applied Mechanics continues to be a publication of high impact. Review articles are provided by leading scientists in the field on an invitation only basis. Many of the articles published have become classics within their fields. Volume 39 in the Mechanics series contains articles on vortex dynamics, the numerical simulation of two-phase flows, environmental problems in China, and piezoelectrics.
