Poetry and Experience

Poetry and Experience PDF Author: Wilhelm Dilthey
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 9780691029283
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 414

Book Description
This is the fifth volume in a six-volume translation of the major writings of Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911), a philosopher and historian of culture who has had a significant, and continuing, influence on twentieth-century Continental philosophy and in a broad range of scholarly disciplines. In addition to his landmark works on the theories of history and the human sciences, Dilthey made important contributions to hermeneutics and phenomenology, aesthetics, psychology, and the methodology of the social sciences. This volume presents Dilthey's principal writings on aesthetics and the philosophical understanding of poetry, as well as representative essays of literary criticism. The essay "The Imagination of the Poet" (also known as his Poetics) is his most sustained attempt to examine the philosophical bearings of literature in relation to psychological and historical theory. Also included are "The Three Epochs of Modern Aesthetics and its Present Task," "Fragments for a Poetics," and two final essays discussing Goethe and Hölderlin. The latter are drawn from Das Erlebnis und die Dichtung, a volume that was acclaimed on publication as a classic of literary criticism and that continues to be a model for the geistesgeschichtliche approach to literary history.

The Comparative Perspective on Literature

The Comparative Perspective on Literature PDF Author: Clayton Koelb
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501743988
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
Few would deny that comparative literature is rapidly moving from the periphery toward the center of literary studies in North America, but many are still unsure just what it is. The Comparative Perspective on Literature shows by means of twenty-two exemplary essays by many of the most distinguished scholars in the field how comparative literature as a discipline is conceived of and practiced in the 1980s. Nearly all of them published here for the first time, the essays discuss and themselves reflect significant changes at the core of the field as well as evolving notions as to what comparative literature is and should be. The volume editors, Clayton Koelb and Susan Noakes, have included essays that address the scope and concerns of comparative literature today, historical and international contexts of the field, and the relationship of literary criticism to other disciplines, as well as affording comparative perspectives on current critical issues.

Bishop Dr. John M.R. Gordon What a wonderfully witty collection of poems As a physician I personally enjoyed Juliet's whimsical multi-faceted views of life within the hospital walls. It is truly a special talent to review and revamp our daily experiences into such comedic storytelling. I look forward to hearing her funny take on future events with much anticipation. Kitonga Kiminyo, M.D. "Capture The Experience Through Poetry" was an idea birthed into my spirit by God's Holy Spirit. I work in a hospital in Boynton Beach Florida, where I care for people from all different backgrounds with myriads of illnesses. On November 4th 2008, I wrote a poem about Election Day, and over the months that followed, I started to write for coworkers and patients alike. I decided to put these poems together in a book and divide them into different sections that would speak to various life experiences. Whether you are living and enjoying your life or going through a trying time and dealing with death and dying, this book can walk you through the experience with a poem that speaks to your situation. You will end up singing, praying, sharing your life experience with others and adding a bit of humor and encouragement to your life. There are poems in the book that can help you with different situations: If you are dealing with the loss of a loved one. If you are a patient or a hospital worker. If you want to add some humor to your stressful day. If you are happy, sad or just struggling in life. If you have failed or want a deeper relationship with your God. If you are discouraged and need to find hope and encouragement. You can capture your various experiences in this one poetry book. Capture The Experience Through Poetry today. There is a poem inside waiting just for you."

Gerard Manley Hopkins and the Poetry of Religious Experience

Gerard Manley Hopkins and the Poetry of Religious Experience PDF Author: Martin Dubois
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316851672
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
This nuanced yet accessible study is the first to examine the range of religious experience imagined in Hopkins's writing. By exploring the shifting way in which Hopkins imagines religious belief in individual history, Martin Dubois contests established views of his poetry as a unified project. Combining detailed close readings with extensive historical research, Dubois argues that the spiritual awareness manifest in Hopkins's poetry is varied and fluctuating, and that this is less a failure of his intellectual system than a sign of the experiential character of much of his poetry's thought. Individual chapters focus on biblical language and prayer, as well as on the spiritual ideal seen in the figures of the soldier and the martyr, and on Hopkins's ideas of death, judgement, heaven and hell. Offering fresh interpretations of the major poems, this volume reveals a more diverse and exploratory poet than has been recognised.
