[Abstract] This dissertation is an account of a psychological study of the experience of writing poetry. An extensive three-year literature review and analysis revealed no quantitative investigations on this topic. One qualitative Master's thesis was located, "Poetry: A Phenomenological and Experimental Investigation," (Collier, 1974) which differs substantially from this investigation in its focus, design, methodology, and findings. Since no research explicitly designed to study the experience of writing poetry was located, the researcher turned to general literature on poetry in order to place this study more fully in the contest of relevant writings in psychology, literature and philosophy. A qualitative design was chosen for guiding the research since the experience of writing poetry contains many important immeasurable qualities. Heuristic methodology was employed in obtaining first person depictions of the experience from the researcher and thirteen volunteer participants. Analysis of data revealed three essential components of the experience: 1) writing poetry is precipitated by a compelling urge to create which springs out of an intensely felt event, situation, or emotion; 2) it is a spiritual experience which enables the writer to transcend ordinary reality and time; and 3) it is an integrative experience of self which enhances identity and awareness. These themes were explicated and brought to life through verbatim samples of the data, and through individual portraits presenting both the phenomenon of writing poetry and the person who writes it. Societal, clinical and educational implications for the findings were discussed, and suggestions made for additional study and research.

Was the experience of poetry—or a cultural practice we now call poetry—continuously available across the two-and-a-half millennia from the composition of the Homeric epics to the publication of Ben Jonson's Works and the death of Shakespeare in 1616? How did the pleasure afforded by the crafting of language into memorable and moving rhythmic forms play a part in the lives of hearers and readers in Ancient Greece and Rome, Europe during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and Britain during the Renaissance?
