History of Progress

History of Progress PDF Author: W. Allen Marr
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784475263
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 2392

Book Description
Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE This collection of 78 historical papers provides a wide view of the rich body of literature that documents the development of fundamental concepts geotechnical engineering and their application to practical problems. From the highly theoretical to the elegantly practical, the papers in this one-of-a-kind collection are significant for their contributions to the geotechnical engineering literature. Among the writings of more than 60 geotechnical engineering pioneers are several by Karl Terzaghi, widely known as the father of soil mechanics, R.R. Proctor, Arthur Casagrande, and Ralph Peck. Many of these papers contain information as useful today as when they were first written. Others provide great insight into the origins and development of the field and the thought processes of its leaders.

Physics of Sound in Marine Sediments

Physics of Sound in Marine Sediments PDF Author: Lloyd Hampton
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468408380
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 568

Book Description
The phenomenon of sound transmissions through marine sediments is of extreme interest to both the United States civilian and Navy research communities. Both communities have conducted research within the field of this phenomenon approaching it from different perspectives. The academic research community has approached it as a technique for studying sedimentary and crustal structures of the ocean basins. The Navy research community has approached it as an additional variable in the predictability of sound trans mission through oceanic waters. In order to join these diverse talents, with the principal aim of bringing into sharp focus the state-of-the-science in the problems relating to the behavior of sound in marine sediments, the Office of Naval Research organized and sponsored an invited symposium on this subject. The papers published in this volume are the results of this symposium and mark the frontiers in the state-of-the-art. The symposia series were based on five research areas identified by ONR as being particularly suitable for critical review and for the appraisal of future research trends. These areas include: 1. Physics of Sound in Marine Sediments, 2. Physical and Engineering Properties of Deep-Sea Sediments, 3. The Role of Bottom Currents in Sea Floor Geological Processes, 4. Nephelometry and the Optical Properties of the Ocean I'laters, S. Natural Gases in Marine Sediments and Their Mode of Distribution. These five areas also form some of the research priorities of the ONR program in Marine Geology and Geophysics.

Selected Geotechnical Papers of James K. Mitchell

Selected Geotechnical Papers of James K. Mitchell PDF Author: James K. Mitchell
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784474990
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 948

Book Description
Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This collections contains 35 key papers by James K. Mitchell during his extraordinary career as a geotechnical engineer.Ø In addition to teaching, Mitchell's career encompassed geotechnical projects ranging from research on hazardous waste landfill stability at Kettleman Hills in California, to lunar soil analysis for NASA Apollo Missions, to working with the Mayor of San Francisco following the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Science. Topics include: experimental and analytic studies of soil behavior related to geotechnical and geo-environmental problems; soil improvement and ground reinforcement, physicochemical phenomena in soils, the stress-strain time behavior of soils, in situ measurement of soil properties, and mitigation of ground failure risk during earthquakes. ASCE's Engineering Classics series presents selected papers of lasting importance by eminent engineers who have made outstanding contributions to their field.

Foundation Engineering Handbook

Foundation Engineering Handbook PDF Author: Hsai-Yang Fang
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475752717
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 935

Book Description
More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.

Terzaghi Lectures

Terzaghi Lectures PDF Author: Karl Terzaghi
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784475799
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
Sponsored by the Executive Committee of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains eight lectures given between 1974 and 1983 in honor of Karl Terzaghi and repressenting diverse aspects of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. Topics include: the relationship of geology and geotechnical engineering and how a study of the geology of engineering sites is an important starting point for all geotechnical site studies; effects of dynamic soil properties on soil-structure interaction; bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations; design and construction of drilled shafts; evaluating calculated risk in geotechnical engineering; proposal forØthe establishment of a national center for investigating civil engineering failures, with several case studies; pre-Columbian earth construction in the Americas and technological developments between 2,500 and 500 years ago; and recent progress in the design and construction of concrete-face rockfill dams. The 1978 lecture by the late N.M. Newmark is not included.

Unsaturated Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice

Unsaturated Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice PDF Author: Delwyn G. Fredlund
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118280504
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 946

Book Description
The definitive guide to unsaturated soil— from the world's experts on the subject This book builds upon and substantially updates Fredlund and Rahardjo's publication, Soil Mechanics for Unsaturated Soils, the current standard in the field of unsaturated soils. It provides readers with more thorough coverage of the state of the art of unsaturated soil behavior and better reflects the manner in which practical unsaturated soil engineering problems are solved. Retaining the fundamental physics of unsaturated soil behavior presented in the earlier book, this new publication places greater emphasis on the importance of the "soil-water characteristic curve" in solving practical engineering problems, as well as the quantification of thermal and moisture boundary conditions based on the use of weather data. Topics covered include: Theory to Practice of Unsaturated Soil Mechanics Nature and Phase Properties of Unsaturated Soil State Variables for Unsaturated Soils Measurement and Estimation of State Variables Soil-Water Characteristic Curves for Unsaturated Soils Ground Surface Moisture Flux Boundary Conditions Theory of Water Flow through Unsaturated Soils Solving Saturated/Unsaturated Water Flow Problems Air Flow through Unsaturated Soils Heat Flow Analysis for Unsaturated Soils Shear Strength of Unsaturated Soils Shear Strength Applications in Plastic and Limit Equilibrium Stress-Deformation Analysis for Unsaturated Soils Solving Stress-Deformation Problems with Unsaturated Soils Compressibility and Pore Pressure Parameters Consolidation and Swelling Processes in Unsaturated Soils Unsaturated Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice is essential reading for geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and undergraduate- and graduate-level civil engineering students with a focus on soil mechanics.
