Book Description
Excerpt from The Critic and the Drama The imprisoning Of it in a tangible dream. Criticism is the dream book. All art is a kind of subconscious madness expressed in terms of sanity; criticism is essential to the interpretation of its mysteries, for about everything truly beautiful there is ever some thing mysterious and disconcerting. Beauty is not always immediately recognizable as beauty; what Often passes for beauty is mere infatuation; living beauty is like a love that has outlasted the middle-years of life, and has met triumphantly the test Of time, and faith, and cynic meditation. For beauty is a sleep walker in the endless corridors Of the wakeful world, uncertain, groping, and not a little. The Court Theatre, 1904-1907

The Court Theatre, 1904-1907 PDF Author: Desmond MacCarthy

Book Description
Excerpt from The Court Theatre, 1904-1907: A Commentary and Criticism It may sometimes depress the critic to reflect how little influence he has upon the fate of the plays and books he criticizes, but this fact is the salvation of criticism, and often, let me hasten to add, the salvation of art. If the case were otherwise, and the critic knew his opinion had a direct effect upon the commercial success of a play, he could hardly bring himself to point out carefully the defects of a performance, which he thought, nevertheless, far better than its competitors for public favour. He would feel bound, in such a case, to consider the immediate effect of what he wrote, and this preoccupation would be fatal to criticism. Happily, we need not think of this. It is obvious that success is achieved independently of the opinion of critics; the sky is red with spreading, blazing reputations which their cold water is as powerless to quench as a fire-engine a prairie fire; nor can their unanimous praise always secure even a modicum of success. For instance, in March 1905, the Court Theatre Company produced a translation of Hauptmann's Bieber Pelz, called The Thieves' Comedy. It was a first-rate performance, and an exceptionally good play. The critics praised it with one accord; not only those who had begun to see in the Vedrenne-Barker management the most notable achievement in modern dramatic production, but also those who were reluctant to admit anything of the kind. Problems of the Playwright (Classic Reprint)

Problems of the Playwright (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Clayton Meeker Hamilton

Book Description
Excerpt from Problems of the Playwright But this new criticism of a new creation has not as yet attained its classic stage. Sophocles achieved his Aristotle;, but our great contemporary drama still awaits a great dramatic critic. The task of criticism is more difficult to-day than it has ever been before. For one thing, the drama has become, for the first time, cosmopolitan. In interpreting the periods of Sophocles, Calderon, Shakespeare, and Moliere, the critic could confine his attention, in each instance, to a single nationality. But worthy contributions to the con temporary drama have been made by nations so diverse as Scandinavia, Russia, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Spain, England, and America. Aristotle could actually see and study at first hand all the plays that' were existent in his world; but, on the same terms, no modern critic could possibly evaluate the best dramatic productions of the last thirty years. Sixty Years of the Theater

Sixty Years of the Theater PDF Author: John Ranken Towse

Book Description
Excerpt from Sixty Years of the Theater: An Old Critic's Memories Macready, Forrest, the Keans, the Booths, Daven port and their contemporaries, will readily assent to the degeneracy of the modern theater in all matters of sheer artistry and histrioni'sm. It is only in scenic accessories, and in the lighter and less permanent varieties of drama that it has made any notable advance. Some attempt has been made herein to point out some of the main causes of this generally acknowledged decadence, and to indicate the most hopeful measures for its arrest.
