Book Description
Others, an important and neglected little magazine, finally receives the attention it deserves in Churchill's superbly crafted study. In Churchill's discussions of Mina Loy, Marianne Moore, and William Carlos Williams, among others, Others serves as a framework for reassessing the scope and significance of modernist formalism. This book is an important contribution to the fields of American poetry and poetics, gender studies, queer theory, and cultural studies.

London

London PDF Author: Mark Ford
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674088042
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 785

Book Description
Called "the flour of Cities all," London has long been understood through the poetry it has inspired. Now poet Mark Ford has assembled the most capacious and wide-ranging anthology of poems about London to date, from Chaucer to Wordsworth to the present day, providing a chronological tour of urban life and of English literature. Nearly all of the major poets of British literature have left some poetic record of London: Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Johnson, Wordsworth, Keats, Byron, and T. S. Eliot. Ford goes well beyond these figures, however, to gather significant verse of all kinds, from Jacobean city comedies to nursery rhymes, from topical satire to anonymous ballads. The result is a cultural history of the city in verse, one that represents all classes of London's population over some seven centuries, mingling the high and low, the elegant and the salacious, the courtly and the street smart. Many of the poems respond to large events in the city's history--the beheading of Charles I, the Great Fire, the Blitz--but the majority reflect the quieter routines and anxieties of everyday life through the centuries. Ford's selections are arranged chronologically, thus preserving a sense of the strata of the capital's history. An introductory essay by the poet explores in detail the cultural, political, and aesthetic significance of the verse inspired by this great city. The result is a volume as rich and vibrant and diverse as London itself.

Significant Other

Book Description
Shortlisted for the Michael Murphy Memorial Poetry Prize 2021 Shortlisted for the 2020 Seamus Heaney First Collection Prize Shortlisted for the 2020 John Pollard Foundation International Poetry Prize Shortlisted for The 2019 Forward (Felix Dennis) Prize for Best First Collection The Telegraph's Poetry Book of the Month March 2019 A Telegraph Book of the Year 2019 In her first book of poems, Isabel Galleymore takes a sustained look at the 'eight million differently constructed hearts' of species currently said to inhabit Earth. These are part of the significant other of her title; so too are the intimacies - loving, fraught, stalked by loss and extinction - that make up a life. The habit of foisting human agendas on non-human worlds is challenged. Must we still describe willows as weeping? In the twenty-first century, is it possible to be 'at one' with nature? The poems reflect on our desire to locate likeness, empathy and kinship with our environments, whilst embracing inevitable difference. As the narratives belonging to animal fables, Doomsday Preppers and climate change deniers are adapted, new metaphors are found that speak of both estrangement and entanglement. Drawing at times from her residency in the Amazon rainforest, Galleymore delves into a world of pink-toed tarantulas, the erotic lives of barnacles, and caged owls that behave like their keepers. The human world revises its own measure in the light of these poems.

WINNER OF THE T S ELIOT PRIZE 2021 WINNER OF THE POLARI PRIZE 2022 'Visionary and powerful. I loved it.' Hollie McNish The female body is a political space. C+nto enters the private lives of women from the butch counterculture, telling the inside story of the protests they led in the '90s to reclaim their bodies as their own – their difficult balance between survival and self-expression. History, magic, rebellion, party and sermon vibrate through Joelle Taylor's cantos to uncover these underground communities forged by women. Part-memoir and part-conjecture, Taylor explores sexuality and gender in poetry that is lyrical, expansive, imagistic, epic and intimate. C+nto is a love poem, a riot, a late night, and an honouring. minds. Here is poetry that defends our right to walk without fear, wear what we choose, be who we uniquely are." - - Diana Souhami
