Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the New York Academy of Medicine, 1893, Vol. 9 Early in the Spring of 1890 I began this investigation, and from that time to the present the bulk of the work has been done by Dr. P. H. Fitzhugh, house surgeon to the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled. We succeeded in getting the names of 499 patients who have applied for treatment at the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled since 1868, or who have applied at my clinic in the New York Polyclinic since 1882, or at my office since 1884. None have been included in this list who came under treatment since November 14th, 1887. An exception might be made of the few who have applied for the cor rection of deformity, or for the relief of an old Sprain of the disabled knee. A few of this number are at present under observation, but are not receiving any active treat ment. Perhaps many others might have been included in this list but for the lack of uniformity in nomenclature during the early days of my hospital life. For instance, the diagnosis of synovitis or peri-arthritis was made, when the cases subsequently proved to be ostitis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Excerpt from Transactions of the New York Academy of Medicine, 1874, Vol. 1 During my practice, having observed these abscesses in perfectly healthy women, with calm and easy dispositions, surrounded by all the comforts of life, I am inclined to differ with them, and establish as a cause the occlusion of a milk duct by coagulated colostrum or milk, which, after the first occurrence, unless removed, at a subsequent nursing may pro duce the same effect as before. The two following cases, one a priori, and the other a posteriori, may corroborate my statement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the New York Academy of Medicine, Vol. 11: For 1894 But little more than three decades have passed since were spoken the words of that particular lecturer whom we all respected, and I may say loved, for his pure teach ing, when by a vote of the faculty he was instructed to deliver a course of lectures upon the subject of ovariotomy he said very quaintly in his opening sentence, Gentle men, I Shall expect to speak to-day with more than my usual volubility and eloquence, as I shall not be hampered with any knowledge of my subject. This really reflected at that time the true condition of abdominal surgery in this city. Gastrotomy, gastrostomy, abdominal section, laparotomy, coeliotomy, being terms little used in those days, some even unknown by good specialists, and by many of those who constituted the great family of general practitioners understood not at all. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Medical Society of New Jersey: 1893 Those who have advocated great principles or instilled pure and noble thoughts into the minds of the people; those who have con quered the enemy of the state; he who, by his conquests, has added to the territorial possessions of his sovereign; statesmen, who have originated and by their zeal and ability carried through the Congress or the Parliament. Measures for the relief of the oppressed - all these have received just praises and adulation during their life. And monu ments have been erected to perpetuate their memories after they were dead. Equally, if not more, are they benefactors of their race who devise means for saving life. Instead of destroying it. Who. By their genius. Rid the world of a scourge or a plague. As well as they who destroy an army or take a city. The hope of the Committee of Arrangements is that your every faculty may be at its best; that the charms of this beautiful city may enchant you sufficiently to insure your coming to us soon again. And that your convening here may bring some balm to bruised and grieved humanity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
