Author: Rebekah Bastian
Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
ISBN: 152308796X
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 223
Book Description
So many women enter their adult lives believing that they should know where they are going and how to get there. This can make life decisions feel intimidating and overwhelming. While some choices that lie ahead are fairly predictable, such as those surrounding career, partnership, and motherhood, the effects of these choices can lead to more complicated and unexpected turns that are seldom discussed. Rather than suggesting a rule book, Rebekah Bastian, vice president at Zillow and recognized thought leader, inspires you to Blaze Your Own Trail. “I have the benefit of being a living example of crooked paths, magnificent screw-ups, and shocking successes,” she writes. Through storylines and supportive data that explore workplace sexism, career changes, marriage, child-rearing, existential crises, and everything in between, you will learn to embrace and feel less alone in your own nonlinear journey. Even better, you can turn back decisions and make different ones. Blaze Your Own Trail includes nineteen possible outcomes and many routes to get there. You will find that you have the strength to make it through any of them.

INTRACO
Author: Faizal Bin Yahya
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814623881
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
Through the lens of the now-defunct Singapore government-linked company (GLC) called International Trading Company (INTRACO), this book offers a historical analysis of the country's economic development strategy. Since its Independence in 1965, GLCs like INTRACO were introduced by the former Deputy Prime Minister, the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, a pioneer of Singapore's remarkable transformation from Third World to First, to fulfil strategic economic objectives. As the country's "lifeblood" has been entreport trade, INTRACO was created to "blaze a trail overseas" by facilitating commercial ties behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. The eventual divestment of INTRACO highlights the same way in which the Singaporean state is acutely responsive to changing global economic and geopolitical trends. This book is useful to academics, students, and the interested lay reader for its insights into the role of the state in economic development in post-colonial countries. Contents:INTRACO and Its Role in the Economic Development of SingaporeGovernment-linked Companies and Sogo ShoshasState-guided Capitalism"National Service" — 1960s to 1980sInternationalisation and "Rough Waters" — 1980s to 1990Post-cold War and Globalisation — 1990 to 2000Devolving a Government-linked Company — 2000 to 2003Conclusion Readership: Academics, policy makers and analysts interested in Singapore's economic history. Key Features:First book on the topic in SingaporeTraces and analyzes the contribution of an early GLC mooted by the late Dr Goh Keng SweeThe primary data of the book is premised on more than 30 interviews with former middle to senior management at INTRACOStudies the “failure” of an iconic GLC and the reasons behind the “failure”Keywords:Singapore;Government Linked Company;Economy;Trade;Politics;Cold War;Globalisation;Strategic;Political;Socialist

Author: Emily Inez Denny

ISBN: 9781332334162
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 546
Book Description
Excerpt from Blazing the Way: Or True Stories, Songs and Sketches of Puget Sound and Other Pioneers In the early days when a hunter, explorer or settler essayed to tread the mysterious depths of the unknown forest of Puget Sound, he took care to "blaze the way." At brief intervals he stopped to cut with his sharp woodman's ax a generous chip from the rough bark of fir, hemlock or cedar tree, leaving the yellow inner bark or wood exposed, thereby providing a perfect guide by which he retraced his steps to the canoe or cabin. As the initial stroke it may well be emblematical of the beginnings of things in the great Northwest. I do not feel moved to apologize for this book; I have gathered the fragments within my reach; such or similar works are needed to set forth the life, character and movement of the early days on Puget Sound. The importance of the service of the Pioneers is as yet dimly perceived; what the Pilgrim Fathers were to New England, the Pioneers were to the Pacific Coast, to the "nations yet to be," who, following in their footsteps, shall people the wilds with teeming cities, a "human sea," bearing on its bosom argosies of priceless worth.
