Book Description
English summary: Why does the church have four different written Gospels, although according to Paul there was only one orally proclaimed Gospel from the very beginning? Martin Hengel attempts to answer this question by showing how the collection of the four Gospels developed in the 2nd century and by tracing their origins. The reading of these four Gospels, in addition to the texts of the Old Testament, during the church service played a decisive role in the collection and the affirmation of these Gospels as part of the church canon. The author also deals with the authors of the Gospels and the time in which they were written. He bases his study on the fact that Mark was the first to write a Gospel. It is very probable that Matthew, who wrote the later Gospel, was familiar with the earlier Gospel according to Luke and that he used this. The numerous minor agreements between Luke and Matthew against Mark make it reasonable to suppose this hypothesis to be correct. This is the substantially enlarged German version of the English book The Four Gospels and the One Gospel of Jesus Christ, translated by John Bowden, published by SCM Press in the year 2000. Theo K. Heckel in Theologische Literaturzeitung 134 (2009), 804f.

Das Evangelium und die Evangelien PDF Author: Peter Stuhlmacher

Pages : 465

Book Description
This volume contains the studies and lectures that were discussed at an international symposium on "The Gospel and the Gospels" in Tübingen, Germany, in September 1982. The contributions deal sequentially with the state and methods of gospel research, Jesus' gospel of the kingdom of God, the development and nature of the gospel tradition, the history of the term "gospel," the Pauline gospel, the genre and profile of the four biblical gospels, the relationship of the canonical gospels to Greek biography, the tradition of Agrapha (= words of the earthly Jesus not recorded in the four Biblical Gospels), and Justin's view of the "Memoirs of the Apostles." The essays seek to pave a way for the exploration and theological evaluation of the Gospels and their traditions out of the aporias of radical gospel criticism.

Matthean Posteriority

Matthean Posteriority PDF Author: Robert K. MacEwen
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0567013561
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
This book explores the Matthean Posteriority Hypothesis (MPH), a largely neglected solution to the Synoptic Problem which holds that the author of the Gospel of Luke used the Gospel of Mark as a source, and that the author of the Gospel of Matthew used both the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Luke as sources. MacEwen begins with a survey of the scholars who have defended various forms of the MPH. Chapter 2 discusses two key lines of evidence which support the MPH. The first line of evidence is textual - demonstrating that Matthew could have known the contents of Luke's Gospel beyond merely the double tradition material. The second line of evidence, involving a study of strings of verbatim agreements in the Gospels, supports the view that Matthew depended directly on Luke. Chapter 3 explores evidence and arguments which can be seen as problematic for the MPH. MacEwen concludes that the MPH has been neither definitely proved nor disproved, and deserves further scholarly scrutiny.

Reading Mark's Gospel as a Text from Collective Memory

Reading Mark's Gospel as a Text from Collective Memory PDF Author: Sandra Huebenthal
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 1467458465
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 644

Book Description
How did the Gospel of Mark come to exist? And how was the memory of Jesus shaped by the experiences of the earliest Christians? For centuries, biblical scholars examined texts as history, literature, theology, or even as story. Curiously absent, however, has been attention to processes of collective memory in the creation of biblical texts. Drawing on modern explorations of social memory, Sandra Huebenthal presents a model for reading biblical texts as collective memories. She demonstrates that the Gospel of Mark is a text evolving from collective narrative memory based on recollections of Jesus’s life and teachings. Huebenthal investigates the principles and structures of how groups remember and how their memory is structured and presented. In the case of Mark’s Gospel, this includes examining which image of Jesus, as well as which authorial self-image, this text as memory constructs. Reading Mark’s Gospel as a Text from Collective Memory serves less as a key to unlock questions about the historical Jesus and more as an examination of memory about him within a particular community, providing a new and important framework for interpreting the earliest canonical gospel in context.
