Direct Measurement of the Hyperfine Structure Interval of Positronium Using High-Power Millimeter Wave Technology PDF Author: Akira Miyazaki

Book Description
In this thesis, the author develops new high-power millimeter wave techniques for measuring the hyperfine structure of positronium (Ps-HFS) directly for the first time in the world. Indirect measurement of Ps-HFS in the literature might have systematic uncertainties related to the use of a static magnetic field. Development of the millimeter wave devices supports the precise determination of Ps-HFS by directly measuring the Breit-Wigner resonant transition from o-Ps to p-Ps without the magnetic field. At the same time, the width of the measured Breit-Wigner resonance directly provides the lifetime of p-Ps. This measurement is the first precise spectroscopic experiment involving the magnetic dipole transition and high-power millimeter waves. The development of a gyrotron and a Fabry-Pérot cavity is described as providing an effective power of over 20 kW, which is required to cause the direct transition from o-Ps to p-Ps. Those values measured by the newly developed millimeter wave device pave the way for examining the discrepancy observed between conventional indirect experiments on Ps-HFS and the theoretical predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics.

Technological Change In Japan's Beef Industry

Technological Change In Japan's Beef Industry PDF Author: James R Simpson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000242145
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
The Japanese Cattle industry has been undergoing major changes for the past three decades. During the 1950's and 1960's mechanized power rapidly. The process of beef industry structure change accelerated in the 1970's as medium scale feedlots came into being, regional packing plants were established, and the beef marketing system matured. Economic forces, both within and external to the industry. A major objective of this book is to test the authors’ hypothesis that beef production by Japan's cattle industry could become competitive with imported beef.

The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon

The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon PDF Author: Fred Jegerlehner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540726330
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 433

Book Description
This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g-2)/2 of the muon. The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations.

Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662048973
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 525

Book Description
Published on the occasion of Theodor Hänsch's 60th Birthday emphasis is placed on precision related to results in a variety of fields, such as atomic clocks, frequency standards, and the measurement of physical constants in atomic physics. Furthermore, illustrations and engineering applications of the fundamentals of quantum mechanics are widely covered. It has contributions by Nobel prize winners Norman F. Ramsey, Steven Chu, and Carl E. Wieman.

Handbook of X-Ray Data

Handbook of X-Ray Data PDF Author: Günter H. Zschornack
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540286187
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 969

Book Description
This is the only handbook available on X-ray data. In a concise and informative manner, the most important data connected with the emission of characteristic X-ray lines are tabulated for all elements up to Z = 95 (Americium). The tabulated data are characterized and, in most cases, evaluated. Furthermore, all important processes and phenomena connected with the production, emission and detection of characteristic X-rays are discussed.

Antihydrogen and Fundamental Physics

Antihydrogen and Fundamental Physics PDF Author: Michael Charlton
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030517136
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 101

Book Description
The advent of high-precision antihydrogen spectroscopy has opened up the possibility of direct tests with unprecedented accuracy of some of the most fundamental principles of physics, notably Lorentz and CPT symmetry and the Einstein equivalence principle. This book reviews these principles, emphasising their interconnections in quantum field theory and general relativity and the special role of antimatter, and explores how they may be tested in current and forthcoming experiments on antihydrogen. Original research results relevant to the experimental programme of the ALPHA collaboration at CERN are presented, together with the implications for antihydrogen of proposed theories featuring novel `fifth-force' interactions.
