Earth Science

Earth Science PDF Author: Katherine E. Cullen
Publisher: Infobase Publishing
ISBN: 0816072248
Category : Earth sciences
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
Earth science is the study of the Earth, its origin, its structure, the changes it has undergone, and the past and future consequences of those changes. Its four major branches include meteorology, oceanography, astronomy, and geology. From the formulation of the three major principles of modern geology to the publishing of Principles of Geology, Earth Science profiles 10 influential people who made amazing discoveries in Earth science. Each chapter contains relevant information on the scientist's childhood, research, discoveries, and lasting contributions to the field and concludes with a chronology and a list of print and Internet references specific to that individual.

Painless Earth Science

Painless Earth Science PDF Author: Edward J. Denecke
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1506273270
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
Learning at home is now the new normal. Need a quick and painless refresher? Barron’s Painless books make learning easier while you balance home and school. Titles in Barron's extensive Painless Series cover a wide range of subjects as they are taught on middle school and high school levels. Perfect for supporting state standards, these books are written for students who find the subjects unusually difficult and confusing--or in many cases, just plain boring, and may need a little extra help. Barron's Painless Series authors' main goal is to clear up students' confusion and perk up their interest by emphasizing the intriguing and often exciting ways in which they can put each subject to practical use. Most of these books take a light-hearted approach to their subjects, often employing humor, and always presenting fun-learning exercises that include puzzles, games, and challenging "Brain Tickler" problems to solve. This title describes the exciting revolution in our understanding of Earth's processes and changes, focusing on movement of tectonic plates, earthquakes, volcanoes, and much more.

Review of NASA's Solid-Earth Science Strategy

Review of NASA's Solid-Earth Science Strategy PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309165717
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 56

Book Description
The report reviews NASA's solid-earth science strategy, placing particular emphasis on observational strategies for measuring surface deformation, high-resolution topography, surface properties, and the variability of the earth's magnetic and gravity fields. The report found that NASA is uniquely positioned to implement these observational strategies and that a number of agency programs would benefit from the resulting data. In particular, the report strongly endorses the near-term launch of a satellite dedicated to L-band InSAR measurements of the land surface, which is a key component of the U.S. Geological Survey's hazards mitigation program and the multi-agency EarthScope program.

Earth Science and Applications from Space

Earth Science and Applications from Space PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 9780309103879
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 460

Book Description
Natural and human-induced changes in Earth's interior, land surface, biosphere, atmosphere, and oceans affect all aspects of life. Understanding these changes requires a range of observations acquired from land-, sea-, air-, and space-based platforms. To assist NASA, NOAA, and USGS in developing these tools, the NRC was asked to carry out a "decadal strategy" survey of Earth science and applications from space that would develop the key scientific questions on which to focus Earth and environmental observations in the period 2005-2015 and beyond, and present a prioritized list of space programs, missions, and supporting activities to address these questions. This report presents a vision for the Earth science program; an analysis of the existing Earth Observing System and recommendations to help restore its capabilities; an assessment of and recommendations for new observations and missions for the next decade; an examination of and recommendations for effective application of those observations; and an analysis of how best to sustain that observation and applications system.

Steps to Facilitate Principal-Investigator-Led Earth Science Missions

Steps to Facilitate Principal-Investigator-Led Earth Science Missions PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309091853
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 94

Book Description
Principal-investigator (PI) Earth science missions are small, focused science projects involving relatively small spacecraft. The selected PI is responsible for the scientific and programmatic success of the entire project. A particular objective of PI-led missions has been to help develop university-based research capacity. Such missions, however, pose significant challenges that are beyond the capabilities of most universities to manage. To help NASA's Office of Earth Science determine how best to address these, the NRC carried out an assessment of key issues relevant to the success of university-based PI-led Earth observation missions. This report presents the result of that study. In particular, the report provides an analysis of opportunities to enhance such missions and recommendations about whether and, if so, how they should be used to build university-based research capabilities.
