FOCUS in the Theory of Grammar and the Syntax of Hungarian

FOCUS in the Theory of Grammar and the Syntax of Hungarian PDF Author: Julia Horvath
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 311084916X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon.

The Syntactic Structure of Hungarian

The Syntactic Structure of Hungarian PDF Author: Ferenc Kiefer
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004373179
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 494

Book Description
Hungarian syntax has played a vital, albeit much debated role in linguistic theory since the early 1980s. Volume 27 of "Syntax and Semantics" is the result of a project on Hungarian syntax launched in the early 1980s at the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The volume illuminates relevant and insightful aspects of Hungarian syntax. It assumes the basic theoretical claims and the basic methodology of generative linguistic theory, and shows that descriptive grammar is best approached by posing theoretically interesting questions. It features comprehensive coverage of Hungarian syntax and presents a complete analysis of salient questions and theories. It offers new insights into Hungarian syntax and discusses the important role Hungarian syntax has played in linguistic theory throughout the past decade.

Configurationality in Hungarian

Configurationality in Hungarian PDF Author: Katalin E. Kiss
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400937032
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to argue for the claim that Hungarian sentence structure consists of a non-configurational propositional component, preceded by configurationally determined operator positions. In the course of this, various descriptive issues of Hungarian syntax will be analyzed, and various theoretical questions concerning the existence and nature of non configurational languages will be addressed. The descriptive problems to be examined in Chapters 2 and 3 center around the word order of Hungarian sentences. Chapter 2 identifies an invariant structure in the apparently freely permutable Hungarian sentence, pointing out systematic correspondences between the structural position, interpre tation, and stressing and intonation of the different constituents. Chapter 3 analyzes the word order phenomenon traditionally called 'sentence inter- I twining' of complex sentences, and shows that the term, in fact, covers two different constructions (a structure resulting from operator movement, and a base generated pattern) with differences in constituent order, operator scope and V-object agreement. Chapter 4 deals interpretation, case assignment, with the coreference possibilities of reflexives, reciprocals, personal pro nouns, and lexical NPs. Finally, Chapter 5 assigns structures to the two major sentence types containing an infinitive. It analyzes infinitives with an AGR marker and a lexical subject, focusing on the problem of case assignment to the subject, as well as subject control constructions, accounting for their often paradoxical, simultaneously mono- and biclausal behaviour in respect to word order, operator scope, and V-object agreement.

The Syntax of Hungarian

The Syntax of Hungarian PDF Author: Katalin É Kiss
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780511148460
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
Clearly written and comprehensive in scope, this is an essential guide to syntax in the Hungarian language. It describes the key grammatical features of the language, focusing on the phenomena that have proved to be theoretically the most relevant and have attracted the most attention.

The Limits of Syntax

The Limits of Syntax PDF Author: Peter Culicover
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004373160
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 415

Book Description
Contains a collection of essays which explore the ways in which greater incorporation of nonsyntactic explanations into linguistic research may deepen the understanding of problematic linguistic phenomena and, at the same time, strengthen syntactic research. It also addresses the status of syntactic constraints.

Discourse Configurational Languages

Discourse Configurational Languages PDF Author: Katalin É Kiss
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0195088344
Category : Generative grammar
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
Comprising eleven studies on languages with designated structural topic and focus positions, this volume includes an introduction surveying the empirical and theoretical problems involved in the description of this language type. Focusing on languages outside the traditional Indo-European group, the essays look at Chadic, Somali, Basque, Catalan, Old Romance, Greek, Hungarian, Finnish, Korean, and Quechua. The papers provide interesting new empirical data, as well as a variety of means and alternatives of representing them structurally. At the same time, they address important theoretical questions in the framework of generative theory. This is the first study to apply methods of comparative syntax to the study of topic and focus.

Dravidian Syntax and Universal Grammar

Dravidian Syntax and Universal Grammar PDF Author: K. A. Jayaseelan
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190630221
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 705

Book Description
This volume comprises twenty eight papers selected from the widely known work of K.A. Jayaseelan and R. Amritavalli on Dravidian. Collectively, these papers cover the entire area of Dravidian syntax: they range from broad questions such as sentence structure and word order to more particular questions such as the morphological basis of anaphora, the genesis of lexical categories, the morpho-syntax of quantifiers, and the syntax and semantics of questions. Important universalist claims are embedded in these essays; for this reason, this volume will be of interest also to a student of the general theory of syntax. No future discussion of Dravidian (or South Asian) languages is possible without taking into account the insightful analyses set forth in these pages.

Phrasal and Clausal Architecture

Phrasal and Clausal Architecture PDF Author: Simin Karimi
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027292922
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
The present collection includes papers that address a wide range of syntactic phenomena. In some, the authors discuss such major syntactic properties as clausal architecture, syntactic labels and derivation, and the nature of features and their role with respect to movement, agreement, and event-related constructions. In addition, several papers offer syntax-based discussions of aspects of acquisition, pedagogy, and neurolinguistics, addressing issues related to case marking, negation, thematic relations, and more. Several papers report on new findings relevant to less commonly investigated languages, and all provide valuable observations related to natural language syntactic properties, many of which are universal in their implications. The authors challenge several aspects of recent syntactic theory, broaden the applicable scope of others, and introduce important and provocative analyses that bear on current issues in linguistics.
