Book Description
This is the story about 10 students (the STAT PACK) who are working their way through lessons in money mathematics. They are serious students who progress to the point where they can, among many other things, calculate mortgage payments, understand the dangers of making minimum payments on credit card bills, explain a financial retirement savings program, demonstrate how a Ponzi scheme works, and provide illustrations showing the advantages of starting to save early. Their leader in this educational adventure is Herkimer, a cartoon character who provides stimulating questions and activities to enhance the learning process. Herkimer is not the teacher, but he is always present when Pack members have discussions relating to money topics they are studying. He is a Hobbs-like character (for those familiar with the Calvin and Hobbs comic strip) who is visible only to the Pack. Herkimer is not unfamiliar to the students since they had worked with him while learning basic statistics in a previous book titled THE STATISTICAL ODYSSEY OF HERKIMER AND THE STAT PACK. A major reason for the financial crisis that began in 2008 was a lack of financial literacy in citizens of all ages. Author Sanderson M. Smith is a multiple award-winning mathematics teacher (including the California Presidential Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics and a California National Educator Award) who developed a FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS course at Cate School (Carpinteria, CA) many years ago. This entertaining and easy-to-read book includes lessons and activities that were developed for students in the extremely popular Cate course.

Book Description
This is the third book in a series of adventures involving Herkimer and a group of ten students who call themselves the Stat Pack. The first two books related to two very practical and useful mathematical subjects, statistics and finance. They were not written to be textbooks; each consisted of a series of easy-to-read vignettes involving conversations and interactions between the fantasy character Herkimer and the Stat Pack students who had a genuine desire to learn mathematical concepts that would be important and valuable as they progressed into adulthood. The statistical adventures of this group can be found in THE STATISTICAL ODYSSEY OF HERKIMER AND THE STAT PACK and the financial explorations in HERKIMER AND THE STAT PACK VENTURE INTO MONEY MATHEMATICS. Both books represent AuthorHouse publications. A reader of these books would learn much about statistics and finance as they shared the experiences and activities Herkimer created for the Stat Pack. In this book the students actually join Herkimer in creating a series of fun activities designed to help readers gain a better understanding of the wonderful country known as the United States of America. It is designed to be of interest to all age groups. Adults can enjoy the book as well as children. In this period where geography is infrequently taught in schools the activities herein represent a potential source of educational family fun and enjoyment. The book should serve as a reminder that useful and meaningful educational adventures can take place outside of the school classroom.

Book Description
This is a story about 10 students (the Stat Pack) who are working their way through an introductory course in statistics. They are serious students who progress from introductory statistical concepts to sophisticated topics such as inference and hypothesis testing. Their leader in this educational adventure is Herkimer, a cartoon character who provides stimulating questions and activities to enhance the learning process. Herkimer is not the teacher, but he is always present when Pack members have discussions relating to topics they are studying. He is a Hobbs-like character (for those familiar with the Calvin and Hobbs comic strip) who is visible only to the Pack. There are a total of 108 vignettes in the book, each representing a statistical encounter involving Herkimer and the Stat Pack. After each set of five vignettes, Herkimer provides a break page containing inspirational and mathematical quotes, origins of mathematical words, mathematics history tidbits, humorous probability quizzes, and United States geography activities. The book offers the reader an opportunity to extend his/her knowledge of the geography of the United States, including learning capital cities, state mottos, and the origin of state names. The Separator State Challenges represent a unique set of activities for those wishing to learn about U.S. Geography. Herkimer and the Stat Pack discuss and analyze probability problems involving bingo, poker, craps, bridge, roulette, the California Lottery, the famous birthday problem, and the three-door problem that perplexed mathematicians throughout the country.

Colour-Coded

Colour-Coded PDF Author: Constance Backhouse

Book Description
Historically Canadians have considered themselves to be more or less free of racial prejudice. Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today. Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' From thousands of possibilities, Backhouse has selected studies that constitute central moments in the legal history of race in Canada. Her selection also considers a wide range of legal forums, including administrative rulings by municipal councils, criminal trials before police magistrates, and criminal and civil cases heard by the highest courts in the provinces and by the Supreme Court of Canada. The extensive and detailed documentation presented here leaves no doubt that the Canadian legal system played a dominant role in creating and preserving racial discrimination. A central message of this book is that racism is deeply embedded in Canadian history despite Canada's reputation as a raceless society. Winner of the Joseph Brant Award, presented by the Ontario Historical Society
