The collected essays in this volume focus on the presentation, representation and interpretation of ancient violence – from war to slavery, rape and murder – in the modern visual and performing arts, with special attention to videogames and dance as well as the more usual media of film, literature and theatre. Violence, fury and the dread that they provoke are factors that appear frequently in the ancient sources. The dark side of antiquity, so distant from the ideal of purity and harmony that the classical heritage until recently usually called forth, has repeatedly struck the imagination of artists, writers and scholars across ages and cultures. A global assembly of contributors, from Europe to Brazil and from the US to New Zealand, consider historical and mythical violence in Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus and the 2010 TV series of the same name, in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, in the work of Lars von Trier, and in Soviet ballet and the choreography of Martha Graham and Anita Berber. Representations of Roman warfare appear in videogames such as Ryse: Son of Rome and Total War, as well as recent comics, and examples from both these media are analysed in the volume. Finally, interviews with two artists offer insight into the ways in which practitioners understand and engage with the complex reception of these themes.

Art Nouveau was a style for a new age, but it was also one that continued to look back to the past. This new study shows how in expressing many of their most essential concerns – sexuality, death and the nature of art – its artists drew heavily upon classical literature and the iconography of classical art. It challenges the conventional view that Art Nouveau's adherents turned their backs on Classicism in their quest for new forms. Across Europe and North America, artists continued to turn back to the ancient world, and in particular to Greece, for the vitality with which they sought to infuse their creations. The works of many well-known artists are considered through this prism, including those of Gustav Klimt, Aubrey Beardsley and Louis Comfort Tiffany. But, breaking new ground in its comparative approach, this study also considers some of the movement's less well-known painters, sculptors, jewellers and architects, including in central and eastern Europe, and their use of classical iconography to express new ideas of nationhood. Across the world, while Art Nouveau was a plural style drawing on multiple influences, the Classics remained a key artistic vocabulary for its artists, whether blended with Orientalist and other iconographies, or preserving the purity of classical form.

Spatial variation and patterning in the distribution of artefacts are topics of fundamental significance in Balkan archaeology. I saggi raccolti in questo volume illustrano i risultati scientifici del primo anno di attività che un team italo-montenegrino ha svolto sul sito di Doclea e sul territorio circostante (ArcheoLab Italia Montenegro). Il progetto nasce da una serie di accordi bilaterali che dal 2015 l’Istituto di Studi sul Mediterraneo Antico e il Dipartimento Scienze Umane e Sociali, Patrimonio culturale del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche ha intrattenuto con il Ministero della Scienza, il Ministero della Cultura del Montenegro e l’Historical Institute dell’Università del Montenegro. Oggetto della ricerca è la città romana di Doclea e il suo territorio: fondata come municipio romano nel I sec. d.C. in una pianura circondata da colline e delimitata da tre corsi d’acqua, si trova a circa tre chilometri dall’attuale capitale del paese, Podgorica. Scavata soprattutto alla fine del XIX secolo e solo in parte nel corso del XX secolo, fu la seconda città importante per dimensioni della Dalmazia romana. Ancora oggi sono visibili un grande foro, terme, templi e case private, tre chiese di epoca medievale oltre a un imponente circuito murario. Alcuni discutibili interventi moderni, quali la costruzione di una ferrovia che negli anni ’40 ha tagliato a metà il sito archeologico e la mancanza di una vera politica di conservazione e valorizzazione, stanno mettendo a rischio l’integrità e la capacità di fruizione del sito, che rappresenta uno dei monumenti più importanti per l’identità culturale della nazione montenegrina. Dalle ricerche di archivio e bibliografiche alla ricognizione archeologica, fino all’applicazione di nuove tecnologie di indagine, il testo è il risultato di un dialogo interdisciplinare che ha lo scopo di conoscere e valorizzare il sito e il suo paesaggio. Dal 2018 l’ArcheoLab Italia Montenegro è divenuto Progetto di Grande Rilevanza del Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale con il titolo “Il Futuro del Passato: studio e valorizzazione dell’antica Doclea, Montenegro” (2018-2020).

Against the backdrop of building a new country, this study explores and evaluates the documentation culture in early republican Turkey. Having fought the Turkish War of Independence (1919–22) against the Allied Powers, the revolutionaries led by legendary leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) came to engage with the idea of the West and its cultural origin. With the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the constitution abolished the 600-year-old Ottoman Empire including the dynastic cultural, economic, educational, and governmental institutions. In the redemption of the nation within the modern history of civilizations, cultural Westernization and technical modernization became the model for the newly found nation-state. While the new country became the subject of reformation, historic architecture was called upon to grant the aura of a glorious past to the Turks. Through the materialization of ‘Türk Tarih Tezi’ (the Turkish History Thesis), the founding leaders focused on the origin of Turks and the everlasting spirit of the Turkish state. In this pursuit, architectural heritage signified the formative power to represent the past. Supported by state-agencies, scholars, with supreme patriotic zeal and diligence, travelled across the remotest corners of the country to document and study the historic architecture of the nation. To date, the complicated question of a national identity embodied in the built environment has dominated the contemporary scholarship on early republican historiography. Akboy-İlk’s study, however, distinguishes itself with its focus on architectural documentation, which became an agent of history-writing in the early years of the nation state. Curated by the ideologies of the state, the formal documentation findings extensively informed the republican plot of the modern progress of Turks. For scholars interested in a closer reading of the crossing boundaries between architectural heritage and nation-building in the case of the modernization of Turkey, this book is revealing and provocative in bringing forward architectural documentation, a remarkably overlooked subject in studies of the area.
