Ustedes se daran cuenta de esa convivencia que tuve con los animales, que para mi eran mi otra familia. Ademas, conoceran de mis principios en la musica, mayormente, en mi adolescencia; y tambien les hablare de los lugares en donde tuve que salir a trabajar lejos de mi casa, cuando yo era muy joven. Asi van a encontrar muchas cosas interesantes. Tambien van a encontrar mi historia de cuando yo cruce para el otro lado, y se daran cuenta de todos los peligros que existen para poder cruzar; el famoso Rio Bravo, que yo no se lo recomiendo a nadie, pero bueno, siempre arriesgamos nuestras vidas para poder llegar a este pais y asi poder lograr el sueno americano. Tambien ustedes se daran cuenta de que aqui nada es facil, y de que todo es muy diferente a lo que nos contaban alla cuando estabamos en nuestros paises, y tambien se daran cuenta de como vivimos en este pais, de que aqui siempre vivimos al dia y para poder comer. Tambien aprenderan que con tantos sacrificios y con tantos esfuerzos que tenemos cada dia, si podremos salir a delante, que si se puede. En mi libro tambien van a encontrar algo de ese amor y de esa paz, y, sobre todo, de esa esperanza tan espiritual que Dios nos da, porque Dios existe, solamente tenemos que salir a buscarlo y ahi esta para darnos amor y esperanza, porque El nunca nos abandona. Ahi ustedes van a conocer como ha entrado Jesus en mi vida, y de como El ha sido parte de mi vida. Para cambiar, algo diferente, tambien yo les hablare de mis mascotas, ya los conoceran y ya veran que divertida es esta historia de ellos; van a ver que se moriran de risa. Ya, por ultimo, vamos a platicar del tema de mi familia; ahi ustedes tendran la oportunidad de conocer y de aprender algo de ellos, que son mi esposa y mis dos hijos; y tambien, yo les voy a hablar de como debemos de tratar a nuestros hijos y de como debemos de hablarles y, sobre todo, de sacarlos adelante, ensenandoles cosas buenas y positivas, dandoles buenos ejemplos. Lydia Mendoza began her legendary musical career as a child in the 1920s, singing for pennies and nickels on the streets of downtown San Antonio. She lived most of her adult life in Houston, Texas, where she was born. The life story of this Chicana icon encompasses a 60-year singing career that began with the dawn of the recording industry in the 1920s and continued well into the 1980s, ceasing only after she suffered a devastating stroke. Her status as a working-class idol continues to this day, making her one of the most prominent and long-standing performers in the history of the recording industry and a champion of Chicana/o music. This bilingual edition presents Lydia Mendoza's historia in an interview between the artist and Yolanda Broyles-González: first is the English translation, then the Spanish original, as told by Mendoza herself. Broyles-González concludes the volume with an extended essay on the significance of Mendoza's career and her place in Tejana music and Chicana studies. Known as a lone artist and performer, Lydia Mendoza's voice and twelve-string guitar-playing figure prominently in her ability to both nurture and transmit the vast oral tradition of popular Mexican song with beauty and integrity. She sang the songs of the people across generations in the old tradition; all are indigenous to the Americas, and many of them to Texas.
