Book Description
Excerpt from Lights and Shades of Military Life In stating my reasons for believing in the superiority of the British army, I have attributed its virtues to our constitution. In doing this, I have been led to a com parison between our constitution and that of the United States of America; and thus my reveries have run into general politics, for I considered myself at liberty to range as far as my fancy pleased. When a man gets to France, he generally runs on to Italy - that is what I have done: from comparing constitutions, I have touched upon their results; and, in defending freedom, I have endeavoured to show that it does not belong to republicanism - a form of government which appears to me to be contrary to nature. God has created us of different sizes, both morally and physically; he has also ordained that we should walk upon our feet, and under the direction of our heads. Now, a republican form of government seems as if we were all to agree to be cut to an equal length, and that all who had heads and feet left should walk upon the one or the other, according as the fashion should be decided by a general vote, passed every four years! Now this I do not like. I am very fond of my feet: I buy good worsted Stockings and good boots for them I keep them warm and dry with great care; but I have no idea of their pretending to wearviii preface. Book Description
"The First Printed Translations" by William James Harris is a bibliography that has been compiled with the view of supplementing existing textbooks on English literary history and assisting students in preparing for examinations in Bibliography and Literature. It will also be of service to those who are working for the professional examinations of the Library Association. The great foreign classics have exercised a direct and decided influence upon English literature and the object of this bibliography is to give in concise form the authors and titles, translations, and dates of the first English translations of the chief foreign authors, and incidentally to enable students to note the effect of such translations on the works of many of our great imaginative writers. Excerpt: "ACHILLES TATIUS. Fourth Century. Greek writer. CLEITOPHON AND LEUCIPPE. Tr. by Rev. R. Smith, 1855. One of the decadent Greek novelists. An erotic novel of a conventional type. Eminent Saxon prelate, one of the most learned of his time. His works, upwards of eighty in number, have been republished by the Ælfric Soc. (London, 1844-46)."
