En el largo y tortuoso proceso del perfeccionamiento del inglés, quizás uno de los mayores obstáculos para el estudiante extranjero sea el aprendizaje de los llamados phrasal and prepositional verbs. El hecho de que un verbo inglés pueda ir acompañado de varios tipos de partículas que le confieren significados bien diferentes (e incluso suponen ambigüedades con la misma combinación verbal), presenta enormes dificultades y confusiones. Ha frustrado a más de un estudiante del inglés como lengua extranjera el darse cuenta de que los niños de habla inglesa aprenden este tipo de expresión de forma casi instintiva, llegando muy pronto a dominar las complicaciones y sutilezas que suponen los phrasal verbs. Dirigiéndose específicamente al estudiante de habla española, el presente diccionario tiene como objetivo ofrecer soluciones tanto claras como completas al enigma de los verbos frasales y preposicionales, ilustrando cada uso con un ejemplo bilingüe. Algunos trabajos ya lanzados al mercado se han limitado a ofrecer un resumen más o menos detallado de los verbos frasales más comunes (normalmente unos cincuenta verbos base). Otros han propuesto soluciones españolas solamente a los verbos estrictamente frasales, y han omitido un gran número de posibilidades idiomáticas de las que habría convenido que el estudiante dispusiera. En nuestra edición, procuramos ir más allá de lo ofrecido hasta la fecha. Con miras a equipar al estudiante de la gama más alta posible de expresiones, incluimos también usos verbales que no suelen figurar en tales diccionarios: los hay que dirían que una expresión como equipar a alguien de algo no debería corresponder a este tipo de trabajo - sin embargo, ya que la traducción más adecuada es to equip somebody with [y no of] something, creo que el estudiante agradecerá que se haya destacado la diferencia, y de paso aprenderá un poco más de vocabulario. Nótese también la inclusión de ciertas expresiones como to act as (hacer las veces de) que, sin ser phrasal verbs, son modismos que al lector juzgamos le serán útiles. Como es sabido, el inglés no se limita solamente a Inglaterra, ni siquiera al Reino Unido. Para reflejar la importancia mundial del inglés, hemos intentado incluir aquí las aportaciones más importantes de diversos países de habla inglesa: entre ellos Irlanda, Estados Unidos y Australia.

The book traces the evolution of the English verb-particle construction (‘phrasal verb’) from Indo-European and Germanic up to the present. A contrastive survey of the basic semantic and syntactic characteristics of verb-particle constructions in the present-day Germanic languages shows that the English construction is structurally unremarkable and its analysis as a periphrastic word-formation is proposed. From a cross-linguistic and comparative perspective the Old English prefix verbs are identified as preverbs and the shift towards postposition of the particles is connected to the development of more general patterns of word order. The interplay of phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic factors in the loss of the native prefixes in the history of English is investigated. In this context the question is discussed to what extent the older prefixes were replaced by particles and borrowed prefixes, how the characteristic etymological and semantic properties of the Modern English phrasal verbs can be explained and what role they play in the lexicon. The author argues that their common perception as particularly ‘English’, ‘colloquial’ and ‘informal’ has its origin in the eighteenth-century normative tradition.
