MAN IS THE ONLY ANIMAL THAT BLUSHES OR NEEDS TO
Principles of Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals
Author: Jeffrey E. Kelsey
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0471794627
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 411
Book Description
Principles of Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals addresses the current "split" model of mental health care, in which physicians provide pharmaco-therapy while non-prescribing practitioners oversee other services such as psychotherapy. Bringing these two areas together, this book familiarizes mental health professionals with the medications used to treat psychiatric disorders. Prepared by world-renowned psychopharmacologists and psychiatrists, this useful resource helps non-prescribing practitioners understand when and why a given medication is appropriate to use, when it is not indicated, and what potential side effects may occur. Also discussed are the appropriate times in therapy when a referral for a medication evaluation is indicated as well as how to broach this issue with the patient. Recognizing that there are almost always a number of medications from which to choose, the authors combine research outcomes with their extensive clinical experience to highlight the important considerations in selecting one medication over another. As an educational tool, the text encourages and supports clinicians who wish to increase patients' understanding of treatment. After an introduction and overview, chapters cover: * Basics of psychopharmacology * Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder * Mood disorders * Sleep disorders * Schizophrenia * Cognitive disorders * Anxiety disorders * Personality disorders * Substance use disorders * Traumatic brain injury * Eating disorders * Side effects Every chapter includes diagnostic considerations, history of medication treatments, and emerging trends for each disease. Principles of Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals lays out what psychotherapists and other mental health practitioners need to know about psychotropic medications, giving them and their patients an invaluable guide to the full array of treatments available.

The Quote Verifier
Author: Ralph Keyes
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
ISBN: 1429906170
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 416
Book Description
Our language is full of hundreds of quotations that are often cited but seldom confirmed. Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier considers not only classic misquotes such as "Nice guys finish last," and "Play it again, Sam," but more surprising ones such as "Ain't I a woman?" and "Golf is a good walk spoiled," as well as the origins of popular sayings such as "The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings," "No one washes a rented car," and "Make my day." Keyes's in-depth research routinely confounds widespread assumptions about who said what, where, and when. Organized in easy-to-access dictionary form, The Quote Verifier also contains special sections highlighting commonly misquoted people and genres, such as Yogi Berra and Oscar Wilde, famous last words, and misremembered movie lines. An invaluable resource for not just those with a professional need to quote accurately, but anyone at all who is interested in the roots of words and phrases, The Quote Verifier is not only a fascinating piece of literary sleuthing, but also a great read.

What is Man?
Are Men Animals?
Author: Matthew Gutmann
Publisher: Basic Books
ISBN: 1541699599
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
"Boys will be boys," the saying goes -- but what does that actually mean? A leading anthropologist investigates Why do men behave the way they do? Is it their male brains? Surging testosterone? From vulgar locker-room talk to mansplaining to sexual harassment, society is too quick to explain male behavior in terms of biology. In Are Men Animals?, anthropologist Matthew Gutmann argues that predatory male behavior is in no way inevitable. Men behave the way they do because culture permits it, not because biology demands it. To prove this, he embarks on a global investigation of masculinity. Exploring everything from the gender-bending politics of American college campuses to the marriage markets of Shanghai and the women-only subway cars of Mexico City, Gutmann shows just how complicated masculinity can be. The result isn't just a new way to think about manhood. It's a guide to a better life, for all of us.

The Animal that Therefore I Am
Author: Jacques Derrida
Publisher: Fordham Univ Press
ISBN: 0823227901
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 192
Book Description
The Animal That Therefore I Am is the long-awaited translation of the complete text of Jacques Derrida's ten-hour address to the 1997 Cérisy conference entitled "The Autobiographical Animal," the third of four such colloquia on his work. The book was assembled posthumously on the basis of two published sections, one written and recorded session, and one informal recorded session. The book is at once an affectionate look back over the multiple roles played by animals in Derrida's work and a profound philosophical investigation and critique of the relegation of animal life that takes place as a result of the distinction--dating from Descartes--between man as thinking animal and every other living species. That starts with the very fact of the line of separation drawn between the human and the millions of other species that are reduced to a single "the animal." Derrida finds that distinction, or versions of it, surfacing in thinkers as far apart as Descartes, Kant, Heidegger, Lacan, and Levinas, and he dedicates extended analyses to the question in the work of each of them. The book's autobiographical theme intersects with its philosophical analysis through the figures of looking and nakedness, staged in terms of Derrida's experience when his cat follows him into the bathroom in the morning. In a classic deconstructive reversal, Derrida asks what this animal sees and thinks when it sees this naked man. Yet the experiences of nakedness and shame also lead all the way back into the mythologies of "man's dominion over the beasts" and trace a history of how man has systematically displaced onto the animal his own failings or bêtises. The Animal That Therefore I Am is at times a militant plea and indictment regarding, especially, the modern industrialized treatment of animals. However, Derrida cannot subscribe to a simplistic version of animal rights that fails to follow through, in all its implications, the questions and definitions of "life" to which he returned in much of his later work.
