Book Description
Several Asian emerging market economies have recently adopted measures to limit the offshore trading of their currencies. This paper provides a general overview of such measures and evaluates the experiences of selected countries that resorted to such measures. It concludes that the measures could be effective if they were comprehensive and effectively enforced, and were accompanied by consistent macroeconomic policies and structural reforms. Such measures, however, could adversely affect investor confidence, financial market development, and nonspeculative economic and financial activities, and impose administrative burden on all parties involved.

Asia in the Global Economy

Asia in the Global Economy PDF Author: Ramkishen S. Rajan
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812791493
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
What is unique about this book? This book is intended for undergraduates, graduates and scientists in general. It introduces certain topics of natural products which are only taught in institutes of higher learning. Despite the fact that there exists a vast literature devoted principally or entirely to naturally occurring compounds, there are very few books or monographs of moderate length that provide an overall view of the field. There are many aspects of natural products that deserve a special emphasis that is unlikely to be encountered in a conventional course of organic chemistry. Among them are biosynthesis; metabolic transformations; and physiological and biological properties of some of the natural products. The field of the chemistry of natural products is so immense that it embraces an almost limitless scope of the compound types. This book contains specialized work that describes the chemistry of separate classes of compounds such as steroids, terpenes, alkaloids, sugars, carotenoids, fatty acids and so on. It also includes data on compounds isolated from various classes of organisms such as, lichens, bacteria, fungi are treated in special monographs. The topics in this book are unlikely to be found in general chemistry courses. The book covers the following topics of natural products: cannabinoids, toxic constituents from marine sources, natural sweeteners, generation of wines, biological markers, pheromones of insects and mammals, pest management and secondary natural chemicals formed by microorganisms. Among the authors of the reviews is Professor Raphael Mechoulam who received the Israel Prize for his work on active constituents (cannabinoids) of the Cannabis plant and Professor Douglas Kinghorn from University of Chicago who is the chief editor of "Journal of Natural Products."

Exchange Arrangements and Foreign Exchange Markets

Exchange Arrangements and Foreign Exchange Markets PDF Author: International Monetary Fund
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1589061772
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
This paper reviews developments and issues in the exchange arrangements and currency convertibility of IMF members. Against the backdrop of continuing financial globalization and a series of emerging market crises since 1997, there have been important changes in the evolution of exchange rate regimes and the pace of liberalization of current and capital transactions among IMF member countries. There has been a shift away from intermediate regimes according to the IMF's official exchange rate regime classification system based on de facto exchange rate policies. The de facto exchange rate classification system has helped to clarify the nature and role of members' exchange rate regimes. It has facilitated discussions with country authorities about the implementation of exchange rate regimes and hence has contributed to more effective surveillance of the international monetary system. The use of exchange controls appears to have been little influenced by the degree of flexibility of exchange rate regimes or the occurrences of currency crises.

Risk in International Finance

Risk in International Finance PDF Author: Vikash Yadav
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135973725
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 191

Book Description
This book analyzes the evolution and impact of the concept of risk on processes of transnational banking and financial market regulation, as well as the externalities generated by speculative financial activity in developing and emerging market economies. The author provides an alternative theory for the study of international financial market regulation by applying elements of a post-structural methodology to the topic. Inspired by Michel Foucault’s framework of critical discourse analysis in The History of Sexuality, the argument dissects the rules of formation that govern the evolving discourse on risk. The author argues that the mathematically formal technology of risk emerges from within specific institutions and economic formations; thereby limiting its utility in the regulation of global financial markets. Exploring how the applied technology of risk has been implicated for fueling a major financial crisis, his work also demonstrates how the regulation of global financial markets and abstruse financial instruments in advanced industrialized countries impacts the lives of the poorest people in developing countries and emerging markets.
