Neurochemical Techniques in Insect Research

Neurochemical Techniques in Insect Research PDF Author: H. Breer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642700454
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
Neurochemical Techniques in Insect Research properly emphasizes the insect. It only scratches the surface of the exploding repertoire of general neuro chemical techniques that can be applied to insect research in 1985. But it al so presents the advantages of using insects for studying certain biological questions that are approachable by neurochemical techniques. Even more so, it summarizes the long list of unique problems encountered in attempting to study insects by neurochemical techniques. As in other volumes of this series, the contributors to this volume are the authorities in the field. They themselves have developed much of the material presented. Thus the sum effort provides a true description of the state of the art; and, pleasantly, it does so in a very complete and clear manner. Readers of this series will not need to be reminded that, despite the fact that vertebrates make up only about 3% of all animal species, research in in vertebrates such as insects has lagged behind that on vertebrates, at least in the neurochemistry area; the relative simplicity and large cell size of the in sect nervous system has always provided incentive for work in neurophysiol ogy and neuroanatomy. Toxicology interests will always stimulate a certain amount of work on insect neuropharmacology, and insects are extremely suitable for several areas of toxin research. Last but not least, the insects are beautiful organisms for which the applications of genetics can be made to the study of nervous system function.

Insect Pharmacology

Insect Pharmacology PDF Author: Lawrence I. Gilbert
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 9780123814487
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 392

Book Description
The publication of the extensive 7-volume work Comprehensive Molecular Insect Science provided library customers and their end-users with a complete reference encompassing important developments and achievements in modern insect science, including reviews on the ecdysone receptor, lipocalins, and bacterial toxins. One of the most popular areas in entomology is pharmacology, and this derivative work, Insect Pharmacology, taps into a previously unapproached market – the end user who desires to purchase a comprehensive yet affordable work on important aspects of this topic. Contents will include timeless articles covering sodium channels, spider toxins and their potential for insect control, insect transformation for use in control, amino acid and neurotransmitter transporters, and more. New summaries for each chapter will give an overview of developments in the related article since its original publication. Articles selected by the known and respected editor-in-chief and co-editor of the original MRW The articles are classic reviews offering broad coverage of essential topics in pharmacology, with special addenda including author notes on the chapter since its original publication Introduction by the editor puts the selected body of work in context for this volume, highlighting the need for entomologists, pharmacologists and related researchers to have these reviews in their personal collection

Book Description
This book represents proceedings from ICINN 1993, and comprises papers on nerve function, neurotransmitters, ion channels, second messengers and neuropeptides. By using a variety of techniques, combining aspects of nrurophysiology, pharmacology, immunology, peptide separation and sequencing or molecular biology, it has become possible to study systems in greater detail and complexity than before.

Insect Control

Insect Control PDF Author: G. A. Kerkut
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 148328624X
Category : Science

Book Description
Volume 12 is devoted to current and future approaches to insect management and control. The topics discussed cover chemical control, including the use of juvenile hormone analogs, microbiological methods, including viral and fungal agents, biological control, and genetic approaches to insect control. The 20 chapters, all amply referenced and illustrated, well demonstrate the multidisciplinary nature of the subject and the degree of international effort that has led to the present state of knowledge. Fifteen of the chapters are devoted to the action of insecticides, reflecting the immensity of the subject.
