Book Description
Abstract: The Proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Nutritional Adaptation in Man aims to explore the longer-term adaptations which take place in people habitually consuming different diets or who are subjected to increased metabolic demands. These adaptations include biochemical and physiological homeostatic mechanisms plus a variety of social adjustments. Contents include: 1) The causes and relationship of child growth retardation; 2) Nutritional adaptation and genetics; 3) Energy intake and expenditure; 4) Appetite control and other mechanisms of weight homeostasis; and 5) Consequence of protein deficiency in man. A postscript is included which reflects participants' attempts to define adaptation.

Human Adaptation to Spaceflight

Human Adaptation to Spaceflight PDF Author: Government Publishing Office
Publisher: Government Printing Office

Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
Human Adaptation to Spaceflight: The Role of Nutrition reflects a (brief) review of the history of and current state of knowledge about the role of nutrition in human space flight. We have attempted to morganize this from a more physiological point of view, and to highlight systems, and the nutrients that support them, rather than the other way around. We hope we have captured in this book the state of the field of study of the role of human nutrition in space flight, along with the work leading up to this state, and some guideposts for work remaining to be done and gaps that need to be filled. The Nature of Nutrition

The Nature of Nutrition PDF Author: Stephen J. Simpson
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691145652
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Nutrition has long been considered more the domain of medicine and agriculture than of the biological sciences, yet it touches and shapes all aspects of the natural world. The need for nutrients determines whether wild animals thrive, how populations evolve and decline, and how ecological communities are structured. 'The Nature of Nutrition' addresses nutrition's enormously complex role in biology, both at the level of individual organisms and in their broader ecological interactions.

Committee on Military Nutrition Research

Committee on Military Nutrition Research PDF Author: Institute of Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309172764
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
The activities of the Food and Nutrition Board's Committee on Military Nutrition Research (CMNR, the committee) have been supported since 1994 by grant DAMD17-94-J-4046 from the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). This report fulfills the final reporting requirement of the grant, and presents a summary of activities for the grant period from December 1, 1994 through May 31, 1999. During this grant period, the CMNR has met from three to six times each year in response to issues that are brought to the committee through the Military Nutrition and Biochemistry Division of the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine at Natick, Massachusetts, and the Military Operational Medicine Program of USAMRMC at Fort Detrick, Maryland. The CMNR has submitted five workshop reports (plus two preliminary reports), including one that is a joint project with the Subcommittee on Body Composition, Nutrition, and Health of Military Women; three letter reports, and one brief report, all with recommendations, to the Commander, U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, since September 1995 and has a brief report currently in preparation. These reports are summarized in the following activity report with synopses of additional topics for which reports were deferred pending completion of military research in progress. This activity report includes as appendixes the conclusions and recommendations from the nine reports and has been prepared in a fashion to allow rapid access to committee recommendations on the topics covered over the time period.

Human Evolutionary Biology

Human Evolutionary Biology PDF Author: Michael P. Muehlenbein
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139789007
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Wide-ranging and inclusive, this text provides an invaluable review of an expansive selection of topics in human evolution, variation and adaptability for professionals and students in biological anthropology, evolutionary biology, medical sciences and psychology. The chapters are organized around four broad themes, with sections devoted to phenotypic and genetic variation within and between human populations, reproductive physiology and behavior, growth and development, and human health from evolutionary and ecological perspectives. An introductory section provides readers with the historical, theoretical and methodological foundations needed to understand the more complex ideas presented later. Two hundred discussion questions provide starting points for class debate and assignments to test student understanding.

Nutritional Needs in Cold and High-Altitude Environments

Nutritional Needs in Cold and High-Altitude Environments PDF Author: Institute of Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309175593
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 584

Book Description
This book reviews the research pertaining to nutrient requirements for working in cold or in high-altitude environments and states recommendations regarding the application of this information to military operational rations. It addresses whether, aside from increased energy demands, cold or high-altitude environments elicit an increased demand or requirement for specific nutrients, and whether performance in cold or high-altitude environments can be enhanced by the provision of increased amounts of specific nutrients.

Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781420067767
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 643

Book Description
Presents the State-of-the-Art in Fat Taste Transduction A bite of cheese, a few potato chips, a delectable piece of bacon – a small taste of high-fat foods often draws you back for more. But why are fatty foods so appealing? Why do we crave them? Fat Detection: Taste, Texture, and Post Ingestive Effects covers the many factors responsible for the sensory appeal of foods rich in fat. This well-researched text uses a multidisciplinary approach to shed new light on critical concerns related to dietary fat and obesity. Outlines Compelling Evidence for an Oral Fat Detection System Reflecting 15 years of psychophysical, behavioral, electrophysiological, and molecular studies, this book makes a well-supported case for an oral fat detection system. It explains how gustatory, textural, and olfactory information contribute to fat detection using carefully designed behavioral paradigms. The book also provides a detailed account of the brain regions that process the signals elicited by a fat stimulus, including flavor, aroma, and texture. This readily accessible work also discusses: The importance of dietary fats for living organisms Factors contributing to fat preference, including palatability Brain mechanisms associated with appetitive and hedonic experiences connected with food consumption Potential therapeutic targets for fat intake control Genetic components of human fat preference Neurological disorders and essential fatty acids Providing a comprehensive review of the literature from the leading scientists in the field, this volume delivers a holistic view of how the palatability and orosensory properties of dietary fat impact food intake and ultimately health. Fat Detection represents a new frontier in the study of food perception, food intake, and related health consequences.
