Photography and Modern Icons

Photography and Modern Icons PDF Author: Federica Muzzarelli
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527590895
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
This volume analyzes how six protagonists of culture, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, built their media image by exploiting the innovations brought about by the invention of photography. By exalting the cult of personality, eccentric narcissism and the nascent mass communication, they made the photographic portrait the tool through which they could become celebrities and, at the same time, found fashion and clothing styles that are still of reference today. From De Mérode’s stereotype of beauty to Baudelaire’s total black dandyism, and from Schwarzenbach’s lesbian-chic style to Nijinsky’s eroticizing exoticism, the book provides detailed insights into the life and work of various protagonists, always keeping in the background the cultural and artistic context of European Modernism. It will particularly appeal to scholars and students of contemporary art, the history of photography, fashion studies and mass communications.

Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll PDF Author: Lindsay Smith
Publisher: Reaktion Books
ISBN: 1780235453
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Though he’s known now primarily as the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, in his lifetime Lewis Carroll was interested at least as much in photography as in writing. This book offers a close look at Carroll’s engagement with the medium, both as a creator and a collector of photographs. Lindsay Smith takes readers to the glass studio above Carroll’s college rooms at Oxford, where he created many of his striking portraits, and she also follows him into the field—on excursions to the theater in London, to the seaside at Eastbourne, and even to Russia. Smith also details Carroll’s enthusiastic work as a collector, in which role he arranged portrait sittings for photographers whose work he admired. Beautifully illustrated with a generous selection of Carroll’s work and that of other photographers of the period, this book gives fans of Carroll’s writing a new way to understand his creative genius.

Icons of Space

Icons of Space PDF Author: Jelena Bogdanović
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000410846
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 458

Book Description
Icons of Space: Advances in Hierotopy brings together important scholars of Byzantine religion, art, and architecture, to honour the work of renowned art historian Alexei Lidov. As well as his numerous publications, Lidov is well known for developing the concept of hierotopy, an innovative approach for studying the creation of sacred spaces. Hierotopy and the related concepts of ‘spatial icons’ and ‘image-paradigms’ emphasize fundamental questions about icons, including what defines them as structures, spaces, and experiences. Chapters in this volume engage with the overarching theme of icons of space by employing, contrasting, and complementing methods of hierotopy with more traditional approaches such as iconography. Examinations of icons have traditionally been positioned within strictly historical, theological, socio-economic, political, and art history domains, but this volume poses epistemological questions about the creation of sacred spaces that are instead inclusive of multi-layered iconic ideas and the lived experiences of the creators and beholders of such spaces. This book contributes to image theory and theories of architecture and sacred space. Simultaneously, it moves beyond colonial studies that predominantly focus on questions of religion and politics as expressions of privileged knowledge and power. This book will appeal to scholars and students of Byzantine history, as well as those interested in hierotopy and art history.
