The application of theory to practice in addressing social transformation still has a lot of room for growth and improvement. This is also true of theory being informed by practice. Too often, there are gaps between what is studied in the academy and what is needed in the field. The academy develops theories in isolation from the everyday lives of people, especially in post-conflict environments. Communities seeking innovative ways to address their social needs can benefit from the learning of theories and research conducted within academia. At the same time, these methods need to be relevant to the local contexts within which they are being used. While there are certain norms of communication in the academy of how research is conducted and disseminated, there needs to be a translation into practical terms to be used in the field. Human rights are increasingly described as being in crisis. But are human rights really on the verge of disappearing? Human Rights Transformation in Practice argues that it is certainly the case that human rights organizations in many parts of the world are under threat, but that the ideals of justice, fairness, and equality inherent in human rights remain appealing globally—and that recognizing the continuing importance and strength of human rights requires looking for them in different places. These places are not simply the Human Rights Council or regular meetings of monitoring committees but also the offices of small NGOs and the streets of poor cities. In Human Rights Transformation in Practice, editors Tine Destrooper and Sally Engle Merry collect various approaches to the questions of how human rights travel and how they are transformed, offering a corrective to those perspectives locating human rights only in formal institutions and laws. Model transformations are the glue that tie modelling activities together. If you’ve used modelling in anger then, whether you know it or not, you’ve used model transformations. They come in all shapes and sizes from moving models between di?erent tools to generating implementations. Model transformations have humble beginnings—at one point, not long ago, it was said by many ‘in the know’ that the way forward in model transformations was to use XSLT. That this idea now raises a wry smile shows how far the model transformation community has come in a short time. Where once model transformations were hacked together in a variety of unsuitable languages, we now have a number of powerful, dedicated languages and theories at our disposal. Since 2008, the ICMT conference series has played a huge part in advancing the subject, and this third edition was no di?erent. The theories and languages presented at ICMT have allowed principled model transformations to play an ever greater part in real systems. Of course there is still much more to do: we need our model transformations, languages, and theories to scale further, allow greater expressivity, be more ?exible, and aid reusability; and we lack empirically backed studies of model transformations in use.
