Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1891, Vol. 26 IN the Harvard Collection of Meteorites there is a small specimen of a pallas iron which is very highly prized as having the Oldest authentic record. It is the main portion of a specimen which was found by Prof. F. W. Putnam in 1883 on the altar of Mound No. 4 of the Turner Group, in the Little Miami valley, Ohio. Therefore it is entered in the Harvard Catalogue as Prehistoric. Ever since the acquisition of this Prehistoric specimen, specialists have been interested in trying to identify the main mass from which the smaller individual must have come. Figure 1, Plate I., shows the Specimen of nearly its natural size as it came from the mound. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1893, Vol. 27 We have thought it desirable to ascertain what results would be reached in different registers with interference beats, such as are present in actual dissonances. It was of course necessary to em ploy simple tones. Our method was a direct one, viz. To produce two such tones simultaneously, and to vary the pitch of one of these by known amounts, estimating by the ear when the sound became the harshest. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 25: From May, 1889, to May, 1890 It is evident, therefore, that in the construction of a telephone line it is desirable to reduce both the resistance and the capacity to a minimum. In a pole line, since the wire is suspended high above the earth, the capacity is always small, and the resistance is the factor that we must try to keep down. In cable lines, however, where the conductor is necessarily brought near to other conductors, or a metal shield, or the earth, the capacity becomes quite an important factor to be respected. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 7: From May, 1865, to May, 1868 As the unit of x is arbitrary, when the interpolations are made at equal intervals it can be taken equal to one of the equal parts of at corresponding to the interpolated values of F3, and then to will repre sent the number Of interpolated intervals contained in one of the origi nal intervals; that is, a) 1 will represent the number of interpola tions in each original interval. In this case the value of 90 used in interpolating is always one of the numbers IF 1, I]: 2, ZF 3, &c.; and if the number of interpolations to each original interval is not too great, the different terms in the expression of E, are readily obtained after the constants B1, B, &c. Have been computed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
