The Fall and Rise of Jerusalem

The Fall and Rise of Jerusalem PDF Author: Oded Lipschitz
Publisher: Eisenbrauns
ISBN: 1575060957
Category : Bible
Languages : en
Pages : 490

Book Description
The period of the demise of the kingdom of Judah at the end of the 6th century B.C.E., the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the exile of the elite to Babylon, and the reshaping of the territory of the new province of Judah, culminating at the end of the century with the first return of exiles--all have been subjects of intense scrutiny during the last decade. Lipschits takes into account the biblical textual evidence, the results of archaeological research, and the reports of Babylonian and Egyptian sources and provides a comprehensive survey and analysis of the evidence for the history of this 100-year-long era. He provides a lucid historical survey that will, no doubt, become the baseline for all future studies of this era.

Temple Restoration in Early Achaemenid Judah

Temple Restoration in Early Achaemenid Judah PDF Author: Peter Ross Bedford
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9789004115095
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
In the early Achaemenid Persian period, the Jews returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple of Yahweh. This volume investigates issues surrounding the rebuilding of this temple, focusing on the timing and purpose of the project, and the social and political circumstances in which it was undertaken. The study reflects on certain passages from the Old Testament, such as Ezra 1-6, Haggai, and Zechariah 1-8; early Achaemenid Persian administrative practices; and Judean hopes for restoration in order to question the contention that the Jerusalem temple was established as an economic and administrative centre around which competing groups struggled for socio-economic and political power.

Return to Jerusalem

Return to Jerusalem PDF Author: David Schlossberg
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781453668917
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 92

Book Description
Return To Jerusalem recounts the events following the defeat of Israel by Babylon in 586 BCE. The story follows the fortunes of two families through their exile to Babylon, the defeat of Babylon by Persia, and the subsequent return of the Jews to Israel. The Jews rebuilt the city wall and re-established the Temple in Jerusalem, and Israel flourished for the next 500 years. Many figures in the book are historical, for example King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (modern day Iraq) and Cyrus and Artaxerxes of Persia (modern day Iran). Others are biblical personalities such as Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah. The clash of Babylonian, Persian and Jewish cultures, attacks on Israel from warring neighbors, and efforts by Jewish leaders to defend and protect their culture are issues which resonate today as they did 2500 years ago.

Exile and Return

Exile and Return PDF Author: Jonathan Stökl
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110419521
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 377

Book Description
Many books of the Hebrew Bible were either composed in some form or edited during the Exilic and post-Exilic periods among a community that was to identify itself as returning from Babylonian captivity. At the same time, a dearth of contemporary written evidence from Judah/Yehud and its environs renders any particular understanding of the process within its social, cultural and political context virtually impossible. This has led some to label the period a dark age or black box – as obscure as it is essential for understanding the history of Judaism. In recent years, however, archaeologists and historians have stepped up their effort to look for and study material remains from the period and integrate the local history of Yehud, the return from Exile, and the restoration of Jerusalem’s temple more firmly within the regional, and indeed global, developments of the time. At the same time, Assyriologists have also been introducing a wide range of cuneiform material that illuminates the economy, literary traditions, practices of literacy and the ideologies of the Babylonian host society – factors that affected those taken into Exile in variable, changing and multiple ways. This volume of essays seeks to exploit these various advances.
