Book Description
This issue of Skin & lnk is our most eclectic ever with articles ranging from inkedup female country singers to ceremonially tattooed headhunters indigenous to the Philippines-and everything in between! Well, we've set this up as an international whirlwind tattoo experience, so let's start much farther than across the pond with Travel in' Mick in Krakow, Poland where he spent a long weekend documenting some incredible examples and info on one of Europe's premier tattoo events. Before heading back to the States don't forget to check out the aforementioned historical piece on the lgorot headhunters of the Philippines. Then we have two stops in the UK to check out the work of the sensational Ollie Tye's conceptual realistic portrait work, and the hyperrealistic work of Jose Contreras' black and grey portraits and rich color pieces. Those two can do it all at a super high level. OK, back in the good ol' USA and we really have a select series of features for you to enjoy and get inspired by. First we hit the Big Apple hard with Brooklyn's own Leathernecks Tattoo, headed up by ex-Marine Kenny "K-Bar." He and his busy team of ink slingers have been kicking out some great work. Then it's on to the New York City Tattoo Convention. No one knew what to expect with this being its first year out of the historic Roseland and in its new digs, but it was a massive success! Speaking of hitting things hard, we stopped in at the Black N' Blue Bowl where hardcore meets ink in a mosh pit of tattoos and sweat. Time to visit some friends from around the country. Frank Weber kicks it old school, Mariann and Jasmin fight for animal rights, and don't forget the Dana Brunson and Nate Beavers columns, plus our gorgeous goofball cover girl Sara X.

Tattooed Bodies

Tattooed Bodies PDF Author: James Martell
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030865665
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
The essays collected in Tattooed Bodies draw on a range of theoretical paradigms and empirical knowledge to investigate tattoos, tattooing, and our complex relations with marks on skin. Engaging with diverse disciplinary perspectives in art history, continental philosophy, media studies, psychoanalysis, critical theory, literary studies, biopolitics, and cultural anthropology, the volume reflects the sheer diversity of meanings attributed to tattoos throughout history and across cultures. Essays explore conceptualizations of tattoos and tattooing in Derrida, Deleuze and Guattari, Lacan, Agamben, and Jean-Luc Nancy, while utilizing theoretical perspectives to interpret tattoos in literary works by Melville, Beckett, Kafka, Genet, and Jeff VanderMeer, among others. Tattooed Bodies prompts readers to explore a few significant questions: Are tattoos unique phenomena or an art medium in need of special theoretical exploration? If so, what conceptual paradigms and theories might best shape our understanding of tattoos and their complex ubiquity in world cultures and histories?

River of Ink

River of Ink PDF Author: Paul M.M. Cooper
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1632860716
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 489

Book Description
In thirteenth-century Sri Lanka, Asanka, poet to the king, lives a life of luxury, enjoying courtly life and a sweet, furtive love affair with a palace servant, a village girl he is teaching to write. But when Magha, a prince from the mainland, usurps the throne, Asanka's role as court poet dramatically alters. Magha is a cruel and calculating king--and yet, a lover of poetry--and he commissions Asanka to translate a holy Sanskrit epic into the Tamil language spoken by his recently acquired subjects. The poem will be an olive branch--a symbol of unity between the two cultures. But in different languages, in different contexts, meaning can become slippery. First inadvertently, then deliberately and dangerously, Asanka's version of the epic, centered on the killing of an unjust ruler, inspires and arouses the oppressed people of the land. Asanka must juggle the capricious demands of a king with the growing demands of his own political consciousness--and his heart--if he wishes to survive and imagine a future with the woman he loves. The first novel from a remarkable young writer, River of Ink is a powerful historical tale set in the shadow of oppression--one with deep allegorical resonances in any time--celebrating the triumph of literature and love.
