Kids' Slips

Kids' Slips PDF Author: Jeri J. Jaeger
Publisher: Psychology Press

Pages : 739

Book Description
The study of speech errors, or "slips of the tongue," is a time-honored methodology which serves as a window to the representation and processing of language and has proven to be the most reliable source of data for building theories of speech production planning. However, until Kids' Slips, there has never been a corpus of such errors from children with which to work. This is the first developmental linguistics research volume to document how online processing is revealed in young children, ages 18 months through 5 years, through their slips of the tongue. Thus, this text provides a new methodology and data source, which will greatly expand our ability to uncover the details of early language development. Professor Jaeger's groundbreaking book incorporates both details of her methodology and findings with implications for different aspects of language development, including phonetics and phonology, the lexicon, semantics, morphology, and syntax. While all the child data is included in the book, a Web site hosted by the author provides readers with the adult data as well. Kids' Slips targets those who study language development in linguistics, developmental psychology, and speech and hearing, as well as those who study language representation and processing more generally in the same disciplines.

Slips of the Tongue

Slips of the Tongue PDF Author: Nanda Poulisse
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing

Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
This book reports the results of an extensive study of slips of the tongue produced by foreign language (L2) learners at different levels of proficiency. Thus, it provides new data which can be used to test current monolingual models of speech production and to further the development of bilingual speech production models. Moreover, it offers a new approach to the study of second language acquisition. The book contains a detailed survey of the findings of L1 slip research, including studies of slips produced by child L1 learners. It systematically compares these findings to those of the current L2 study and relates them to recent monolingual and bilingual models of speech production and to several cognitive models of second language acquisition. Special features of the book are its emphasis on methodological problems and the inclusion of the complete L2 corpus of 2000 slips of the tongue. It is expected that the book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in the areas of speech production and second language acquisition, and particularly to those who would like to test their own hypotheses using the L2 data.Summary of the contents of the book. The book provides an overview of the key findings in L1 slip research. It relates L1 findings to monolingual speech production models. It gives a detailed survey of studies of slips produced by children. It presents an up-to-date review of bilingual speech production models. Book Description
Essential reading for talkers and listeners of all stripes: An original, entertaining, and surprising book that investigates verbal blunders: what they are, what they say about those who make them, and how and why we've come to judge them. “An enjoyable tour of linguistic mishaps.” —The New York Times Book Review Um... is about how you really speak, and why it's normal for your everyday speech to be filled with errors—about one in every ten words. In this charming, engaging account of language in the wild, linguist and writer Michael Erard also explains why our attention to some blunders rises and falls. Where did the Freudian slip come from? Why do we prize "umlessness" in speaking—and should we? And how do we explain the American presidents who are famous for their verbal stumbles?

Tip-of-the-tongue States

Tip-of-the-tongue States PDF Author: Bennett L. Schwartz
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 1135663130
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
Tip-of-the-Tongue experiences are one of those illusive oddities of human cognition. Like slips of the tongue, déjà vu, and visual illusions, TOTs dazzle us with their subjective strength, yet, at the same time, puzzle us with our frustrating inability to retrieve the desired word. This book discusses what little is known about TOTs and speculates about much of the rest of the riddle. Cognitive psychologists know a lot about processes but generally avoid issues of conscious experience and phenomenology. Because the larger goal of this book is to relate the TOT experience to the study of human phenomenology, it goes beyond the conventional cognitive psychology question, "What causes tip-of-the-tongue experiences?" to ask, "Why do we experience TOTs at all?"

ISBN: 1782430709
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
Freudian Slips presents the essential facts and findings of the fascinating subject of psychology in an accessible and enjoyable way, leaving no slip or phallic symbol unexamined. From psychoanalysis to behaviour therapy, via the subconscious and the unconscious, the book charts a path through the subject's controversial history, and encounters the work of all the big names in the field, such as Freud, Jung, Skinner, Bandura, Piaget and Köhler. There are many phrases and experiments from psychology that have made it into the public consciousness, although the meaning behind such examples is seldom commonly known. Featuring entries such as Milgram's experiment, in which 62 per cent of participants willingly electrocuted another person, cognitive dissonance, the Oedipus and Electra complexes, nature versus nurture and the Rorschach test, Freudian Slips will cover everything you need to know about this mercurial branch of science.
