Special features of the book are its emphasis on methodological problems and the inclusion of the complete L2 corpus of 2000 slips of the tongue. Book Description
The study of speech errors or "slips of the tongue," is a research window into language production, probably the most reliable source of data for building theories of production phenomena. The field, however, has only focused on adult speech errors since there has never before been a corpus on such errors in children. This is that corpus, the lifelong work of the author. This is the first research "developmental linguistics" volume on how on-line processing operates in children. The book will be a reference for language development researchers. Target audiences will include all those senior undergraduate and graduate students who study language development in linguistics and speech/hearing programs, as well as, developmental psychology.

In this charming, engaging account of language in the wild, linguist and writer Michael Erard also explains why our attention to some blunders rises and falls. Where did the Freudian slip come from? Why do we prize "umlessness" in speaking—and should we? And how do we explain the American presidents who are famous for their verbal stumbles?

Slip of the Tongue

Slip of the Tongue PDF Author: Katie Haegele
Publisher: Microcosm Publishing
ISBN: 1621067939
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
Slip of the Tongue is a love letter to words and the myriad and contradictory ways we use them. Author Katie Haegele is a respected memoirist who makes sense of the world around her by looking at the ways we use language: to communicate, to make art, and simply to survive. She takes us through her life by describing her family’s rich linguistic history and her own coming of age as a feminist and an artist, and introduces us to her hometown of Philadelphia, a city lively with graffiti, poetry, and the remnants of its colonial heritage. She connects history to the present with research, interviews, and musings on digital technology and the contemporary state of the English language. Slip of the Tongue, a book as brainy as it is heart-warming, is a celebration of that humanity in all its complicated beauty. Haegele's tone is personal and conversational—she is able to explore her subjects with both intellectual vigor and a lot of heart. Her memoir takes a usually inaccessible academic subject of linguistic and joyfully breaks it open for all of us to see and marvel at.
