Solomon among the Postmoderns

Solomon among the Postmoderns PDF Author: Peter J. Leithart
Publisher: Brazos Press
ISBN: 1441201173
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
In Ecclesiastes, Solomon states that "all is vapor" and describes humans as trying to "shepherd the wind." In Solomon among the Postmoderns, author Peter J. Leithart uses these claims, as well as the entire book of Ecclesiastes, to show how Solomon resonated with postmodernism. Exploring the strengths and weaknesses of postmodernism, Leithart shows how the theory reflects an important biblical theme: the elusiveness and instability of the world. But he goes on to show that biblical faith takes us beyond cynicism and despair. Solomon among the Postmoderns will appeal to academics and laypeople alike seeking a biblical view of postmodernism.

An Innocent Generation

An Innocent Generation PDF Author: Justin Chiarot
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 0761857117
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 89

Book Description
An Innocent Generation is an inspired tour de force that delves into the waters of politics, theology, history, and philosophy. In this book, Chiarot offers a uniquely poignant social commentary: the current generation, whether consciously or subconsciously, has taken a Nietzscheian approach to dealing with guilt. Rather than internalizing guilt and dealing with it, we have been taught to outsource our guilt. This unnatural process is at the root of many current societal ills. Chiarot chases the consequences of this paradigm shift down alleys that leads him to the door steps of everyone from Thomas Hobbes and John Calvin to Lady Gaga and Rip Van Winkle. Clever prose, careful analysis, and witty anecdotes make this both an enjoyable and educational read.

Pentecostalism, Postmodernism, and Reformed Epistemology

Pentecostalism, Postmodernism, and Reformed Epistemology PDF Author: Yoon Shin
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1793638756
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 271

Book Description
In Pentecostalism, Postmodernism, and Reformed Epistemology, Yoon Shin critically builds on James K. A. Smith’s postmodern Pentecostal epistemology with the aid of Reformed epistemology. It takes the reader through an interdisciplinary journey that exposits and illumines the relationship among Pentecostal spirituality, continental and analytic philosophy, postliberalism, moral psychology, and philosophy of emotion. This work clarifies misunderstandings of Smith, in Smith, and between continental and analytic epistemology, constructively and coherently synthesizing the sources through interdisciplinary analysis and thereby demonstrating the value of mashup philosophy. The resulting epistemology strengthens the mostly descriptive epistemology of Smith with the warrant criteria of Alvin Plantinga.

A Call to Resurgence

A Call to Resurgence PDF Author: Mark A. Driscoll
Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.
ISBN: 1414383622
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
It’s tempting to believe that the Christian faith is alive and well in our country today. Our politicians talk about God. Our mega-churches are filled. Christian schools dot our landscape. Brace yourself. It’s an illusion. Believe it or not, only 8 percent of Americans profess and practice true evangelical Christian faith. There are more left-handed people than evangelical Christians in America. In this book, Mark Driscoll delivers a wake-up call for every believer: We are living in a post-Christian culture—a culture fundamentally at odds with faith in Jesus. This is good and bad news. The good news is that God is still working, redeeming people from this spiritual wasteland and inspiring a resurgence of faithful believers. The bad news is that many believers just don’t get it. They continue to gather exclusively into insular tribes, lobbing e-bombs at each other in cyberspace. Mark’s book is a clarion call for Christians. It’s time to get to work. We can only do this if we unite around Jesus and the essentials found in his Word, while at the same time, appreciating the distinctives within each Christian tribe. Mark shows us how to do just that. This isn’t the time to wait or debate. Join the resurgence.

Literature Redeemed

Literature Redeemed PDF Author: Nicolas Dreyer
Publisher: Böhlau Köln
ISBN: 3412500097
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
In the post-Soviet period, discussions of "postmodernism" in Russian literature have proliferated. Based on close literary analysis of representative works of fiction by three post-Soviet Russian writers – Vladimir Sorokin, Vladimir Tuchkov and Aleksandr Khurgin – this book investigates the usefulness and accuracy of the notion of "postmodernism" in the post-Soviet context. Classic Russian literature, renowned for its pursuit of aesthetic, moral and social values, and the modernism that succeeded it have often been seen as antipodes to postmodernist principles. The author wishes to dispute this polarity and proposes "post-Soviet neo-modernism" as an alternative concept. "Neo-modernism" embodies the notion that post-Soviet writers have redeemed the tendency of earlier literature to seek the meaning of human existence in a transcendent realm, as well as in the treasures of Russia's cultural past.
