Wetlands of the United States

Wetlands of the United States PDF Author: Samuel P. Shaw
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Marshes
Languages : en
Pages : 76

Book Description
Undisturbed marshes, swamps, and overflow lands have many inherent values and a variety of uses. This report is confined to the use of these natural wetlands by wildlife. Millions of Americans rely on wild animals to furnish them with healthful outdoor recreation. Other values of wetlands include the storage of ground water, the retention of surface water for farm uses, the stabilization of runoff, the reduction or prevention of erosion, the production of timber, the creation of firebreaks, the provision of an outdoor laboratory for students and scientists, and the production of cash crops such as minnows (for bait), marsh hay, wildrice, blueberries, cranberries, and peat moss. Some wetlands provide good fishing. This report points out relative values of different types of wetlands to wild game in general and to waterfowl in particular. It locates and describes areas that should be protected and improved to meet the needs of a stable or increasing waterfowl population. The information is presented with the fervent hope that it will assist and stimulate the establishment of more comprehensive land-use programs and policies. The inventory was financed largely by funds derived from the sale of Federal Duck Stamps. The wetlands data on which this report is based were gathered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with the cooperation of various State fish and game agencies. Much of the assessment of waterfowl values was made by State biologists for their respective States.

Wetlands of the American Midwest

Wetlands of the American Midwest PDF Author: Hugh Prince
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226682803
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
How people perceive wetlands has always played a crucial role in determining how people act toward them. In this readable and objective account, Hugh Prince examines literary evidence as well as government and scientific documents to uncover the history of changing attitudes toward wetlands in the American Midwest. As attitudes changed, so did scientific research agendas, government policies, and farmers' strategies for managing their land. Originally viewed as bountiful sources of wildlife by indigenous peoples, wet areas called "wet prairies," "swamps," or "bogs" in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were considered productive only when drained for agricultural use. Beginning in the 1950s, many came to see these renamed "wetlands" as valuable for wildlife and soil conservation. Prince's book will appeal to a wide readership, ranging from geographers and environmental historians to the many government and private agencies and individuals concerned with wetland research, management, and preservation.

Book Description
Excerpt from Value of Swamp Lands, or How to Make Unproductive Black Soils More Valuable We often hear farmers make that statement and there is much truth in it. Many of these places represent the bottoms of old ponds. The water having dried out or escaped in some way so as to leave the bottom bare. Here Nature has locked up great treasures of plant food, and in doing so, as we shall see, carried the key away with her.
