512stew

512stew PDF Author: Jiwon Park
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780615922805
Category : Art, American
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
512stew is a visual zine and exploration of making meaning, brought to you by a cohort of 18 undergraduate students through the Design Program at the University of Texas. As part of our course 'Images and Communication' we chose a common subject area--cultures of Austin--to explore our own interests and further our communication abilities. With this in mind we set about constructing our own narrative experiences through our exploration of Austin's cultures. We chose to focus on the cultures of Austin because we believe that empathy and the ability to inhabit different domains is vital to the process of effective communication. As designers, we seek to be active cultural producers and the conduits through which messages are transmitted. And as conductors of communication, it is our responsibility to generate content and disseminate it to a widespread audience. 512stew shares our explorations of the different facets of Austin and celebrates Austin's unique character. The project: define and explore a culture of Austin. Research it, experience it, and synthesize it into an engaging story that is expressed through the medium of editorial design. The aim was to use our research to identify and articulate our individual visual language through explorations of shape, color, composition, layout, hierarchy, scale, rhythm, balance, typography, and image relationships. Through this process we have developed our design abilities and furthered our understanding of the principles of visual communication, and the experience of the publication process. Through this publication process we found that designers must act in many differing roles at the same time, from planning, to content generating, to curating, and finally to disseminating.512stew is 18 individual twists on Austin that takes you on a diverse and compelling journey through its unique and varying cultures. This individualism is reflected in the nature of our own cohort --we are 18 individuals connected by our passion for design, each with our own perspective and talents complementing each other and growing stronger together. 512stew is an expression of our intent as designers and our love for this unique, delightful, and inspirational city in which we reside.

Leave Me Alone with the Recipes

Leave Me Alone with the Recipes PDF Author: Cipe Pineles
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 163286715X
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
Saveur “Best New Cookbooks of the Year" Finalist for the Gourmand Award for Cookbook Design The newly discovered illustrated recipes of wildly influential yet unsung designer Cipe Pineles, introducing her delectable work in food and art to a new generation. Not long ago, Sarah Rich and Wendy MacNaughton discovered a painted manuscript at an antiquarian book fair that drew them in like magnets: it displayed a vibrant painting of hot pink beets and a hand-lettered recipe for borscht written in script so full of life, it was hard to believe it was more than sixty-five years old. It was the work of one of the most influential graphic designers of the twentieth century--Cipe (pronounced “C. P.”) Pineles, the first female art director at Condé Nast, whose impact lives on in the work of Maira Kalman, Julia Rothman, and many others. Completed in 1945, it was a keepsake of her connection to her childhood's Eastern European food--she called it Leave Me Alone with the Recipes. For Wendy and Sarah, it was a talisman of a woman they had not known was their idol: a strong, independent spirit whose rich archive--of drawings, recipes, diaries, and letters to family and friends--led them into a dazzling history of mid-century design, art, food, New York City society, and culture. They teamed up with Maria Popova of Brain Pickings and Debbie Millman of Design Matters, along with contributors Mimi Sheraton, Steven Heller, Paula Scher, and Maira Kalman, to present Cipe Pineles's life and work as it should be presented--in glorious color. With Pineles's illustrated cookbook and a section of updated recipes as its centerpiece, this gorgeous volume will delight foodies and design devotees alike.

Mulligan Stew

Mulligan Stew PDF Author: Gilbert Sorrentino
Publisher: Deep Vellum Publishing
ISBN: 1628974753
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 443

Book Description
Widely regarded as Sorrentino's finest achievement, Mulligan Stew takes as its subject the comic possibilities of the modern literary imagination. As avant-garde novelist Antony Lamont struggles to write a "new wave murder mystery," his frustrating emotional and sexual life wreaks havoc on his work-in-progress. As a result, his narrative (the very book we are reading) turns into a literary "stew" an uproariously funny melange of journal entries, erotic poetry, parodies of all kinds, love letters, interviews, and lists—as Hugh Kenner in "Harper's" wrote, "for another such virtuoso of the List you'd have to resurrect Joyce." Soon, Lamont's characters (on loan from F. Scott Fitzgerald, Flann O'Brien, James Joyce, and Dashiell Hammet) take on lives of their own, completely sabotaging his narrative. Sorrentino has vastly extended the possibilities of what a novel can be in this extraordinary work, which both parodies and pays homage to the art of fiction.
