The Developing Marsupial

The Developing Marsupial PDF Author: C.H. Tyndale-Biscoe
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642884024

Pages : 253

Book Description
Marsupials are excellent objects for studies on developmental processes in all mammals including humans. Marsupials are very immature at birth and undergo most of their development in a pouch where they can be manipulated in a variety of ways without affecting the mother. Most of these studies are on systems which largely mature before birth in eutherian mammals and are consequently difficult to investigate. Attention is also drawn to certain features peculiar to adult marsupials: e.g., they continue to grow throughout adult life, valuable for studies on growth mechanisms, and furthermore the composition of marsupial milk changes radically through lactation, most important in studies of hormonal regulation of milk composition and secretion.

Marsupials

Marsupials PDF Author: Patricia J. Armati
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 113945742X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
This 2006 book examines the exciting discoveries in the study of marsupials of the last 20 years. These discoveries have led to significant developments in our understanding of this unique group of mammals. The impact of these developments have been such that marsupials are coming to be seen as model organisms in studies of life history evolution, ageing and senescence, sex determination and the development and regeneration of the nervous system. This volume brings together information scattered throughout the primary literature. Coverage includes evolutionary history and management strategies as well as all aspects of basic biology. A complete listing of known species and a comprehensive list of references make this a unique repository of information on this fascinating group of animals.

Marsupial Biology

Marsupial Biology PDF Author: Norman Saunders
Publisher: UNSW Press
ISBN: 9780868403113
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
Marsupial Biology developed from contributions commissioned from those attending an international symposium held in honour of Hugh Tyndale Biscoe, Australia's most celebrated marsupial biology authority and co-author of the previous leading marsupial biology text published more than 15 years ago. The book does not comprise papers of narrow focus read at the symposium, but chapters reviewing the knowledge in each key area, written to a book format. It has been tightly edited to ensure a great degree of harmony and is suitable as a comprehensive reference text for graduate and undergraduate students.

The Marsupial Order

The Marsupial Order PDF Author: Rebecca Stefoff
Publisher: Marshall Cavendish
ISBN: 9780761426974
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
Mammals with young that develop in pouches after birth are marsupials, or metatherians. Kangaroos, koalas, and Tasmanian devils are just a few of the best-known members of this order. Dozens of small, shy, little-known species are found in the Americas and around Australia. The Marsupial Order explores the origins of these mammals and examines their unusual reproductive method, which has unique advantages. In addition, The Marsupial Order discusses the biology, life cycles, and ecological roles of marsupials, as well as current threats to their survival and approaches to conservation. With a survey of the various metatherian suborders and families, The Marsupial Order introduces pouched mammals from wombats to wallabies and beyond. Book jacket.

Marsupial Genetics and Genomics

Marsupial Genetics and Genomics PDF Author: Paul D. Waters
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048190231
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 518

Book Description
Marsupials belong to the Class Mammalia, sharing some features with other mammals, yet they also possess many unique features. It is their differences from the more traditionally studied mammals, such as mice and humans, that is of greatest value to comparative studies. Sequencing of genomes from two distantly related marsupials, the short grey-tailed opossum from South America and the Australian tammar wallaby, has launched marsupials into the genomics era and accelerated the rate of progress in marsupial research. With the current worldwide concern for the plight of the endangered Tasmanian devil, marsupial genetics and genomics research is even more important than ever if this species is to be saved from extinction. This volume recounts some of the history of research in this field and highlights the most recent advances in the many different areas of marsupial genetics and genomics research.
