The Divine Name(s) and the Holy Trinity

The Divine Name(s) and the Holy Trinity PDF Author: R. Kendall Soulen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : God (Christianity)
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
The first volume of this two-volume work offers a fresh map of Trinitarian language that is simple yet profound in its implications for theology and practice. The author proposes that sacred Scripture gifts us with three patterns of naming the persons of the Trinity : a theo-logical pattern characterized by oblique reference to the Tetragrammaton ; a christo-logical pattern characterized by the kinship vocabulary of Father, Son, and Spirit ; and a pneumato-logical pattern characterized by the open-ended multiplicity of divine names. These patterns relate in a Trinitarian way : they are distinct, interconnected, and, above all, equally important. The significance of this thesis resides in its power to map the terrain of Trinitarian discourse in an innovative way that is faithful to Scripture, critically respectful of tradition, and fruitfully relevant to a broad range of contemporary concerns. --from back cover.

Systematic Theology, Volume 2

Systematic Theology, Volume 2 PDF Author: Katherine Sonderegger
Publisher: Fortress Press
ISBN: 1506464181
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 604

Book Description
Katherine Sonderegger follows her monumental volume on the doctrine of God with this second entry of her Systematic Theology, which explores the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Locating her analysis first in the Hebrew Scriptures, Sonderegger examines the thrice-holy God that is proclaimed to Isaiah in the sanctuary and manifested in the sacrifice of the temple. The book of Leviticus, read in conversation with Exodus, unfolds the doctrine of the Trinity under the character of holiness. In the One God, Trinity speaks of the life, movement, and self-offering of God, who is the eternal procession of goodness and light. In Israel's sacrificial covenant, the Triune God is perfect self-offering: the eternal descent of the Father of Lights is the offering who is Son, eternally received and hallowed in the one who is Spirit. Anchoring the theology of the Trinity in Israel's Scriptures in this way elevates the processions over the persons, exploring the mystery of the Divine Life as holy, rational, and good. The Divine Persons, named in the New Testament, cannot be defined but may be glimpsed in the notion of perfection, a complete and perfect infinite set. In all these ways, the Holy Trinity may be praised as the deep reality of the life of God.

Pages : 320

Book Description
How can what is always eternal be spoken of in temporal terms? How can God who is far above us all be upon this earth and found to be dwelling among us and how can we be a refl ection of Him? How can it be that God is in His Creation, and His Creation in God? Is the Father not the hidden One, from whom all things come? Is the Son not the saving One, by whom we are redeemed this day? Is the Spirit not the guiding One, through whom we shall come to Heaven? And are we not called to be as He is, one with the One LORD forever?

Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus

Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus PDF Author: Austin Surls
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 1575064847
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
The obvious riddles and difficulties in Exod 3:13–15 and Exod 6:2–8 have attracted an overwhelming amount of attention and comment. These texts make important theological statements about the divine name YHWH and the contours of the divine character. From the enigmatic statements in Exod 3:13–15, most scholars reconstruct the original form of the name as “Yahweh,” which is thought to describe YHWH’s creative power or self-existence. Similarly, Exod 6:3 has become a classic proof-text for the Documentary Hypothesis and an indication of different aspects of God’s character as shown in history. Despite their seeming importance for “defining” the divine name, these texts are ancillary to and preparatory for the true revelation of the divine name in the book of Exodus. This book attempts to move beyond atomistic readings of individual texts and etymological studies of the divine name toward a holistic reading of the book of Exodus. Surls centers his argument around in-depth analyses of Exod 3:13–15, 6:2–8 and Exod 33:12–23 and 34:5–8. Consequently, the definitive proclamation of YHWH’s character is not given at the burning bush but in response to Moses’ later intercession (Exod 33:12–23). YHWH proclaimed his name in a formulaic manner that Israel could appropriate (Exod 34:6–7), and the Hebrew Bible quotes or alludes to this text in many genres. This demonstrates the centrality of Exod 34:6–7 to Old Testament Theology. The character of God cannot be discerned from an etymological analysis of the word yhwh but from a close study of YHWH’s deliberate ascriptions made progressively in the book of Exodus.
