The Interstellar Medium
Author: James Lequeux
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540266933
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 444
Book Description
Describing interstellar matter in our galaxy in all of its various forms, this book also considers the physical and chemical processes that are occurring within this matter. The first seven chapters present the various components making up the interstellar matter and detail the ways that we are able to study them. The following seven chapters are devoted to the physical, chemical and dynamical processes that control the behaviour of interstellar matter. These include the instabilities and cloud collapse processes that lead to the formation of stars. The last chapter summarizes the transformations that can occur between the different phases of the interstellar medium. Emphasizing methods over results, The Interstellar Medium is written for graduate students, for young astronomers, and also for any researchers who have developed an interest in the interstellar medium.

Stars, Nebulae and the Interstellar Medium
Author: C.R. Kitchin
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780852745809
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 386
Book Description
Stars, Nebulae and the Interstellar Medium: Observational Physics and Astrophysics complements the author's highly successful Astrophysical Techniques, Fourth Edition (2004). This book describes those characteristics of stars, groups of stars, and the material between the stars that can be directly observed or inferred from the study of electromagnetic emissions and, occasionally, high-energy particles. Providing a wealth of material of interest and use to a wide range of readers, the descriptive chapters are accessible to scientifically literate nonspecialists while the complete text is suitable for most advanced undergraduates in astrophysics.

Neutral-atom Astronomy: Plasma Diagnostics From The Aurora To The Interstellar Medium
Author: Ke Chiang Hsieh
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9813279214
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 328
Book Description
Astronomy has been associated with the detection of electromagnetic waves or photons from within and beyond the solar system, ranging from Radio to Gamma-ray Astronomy. Particle Astrophysics, including Neutrino and Dark-Matter Astrophysics today, started with the discovery of cosmic rays in 1911. The Space Age expanded particle observations to in-situ studies of lower energy electrons and ions with a variety of charge states in space plasmas traversed by spacecraft. Remote observation of space plasmas became possible only after the discovery of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) in space in 1950.This book is a primer for those who wish to learn more about the origins of ENAs, related detection techniques, and how ENA images and spectra can be used to study space plasmas beyond the reach of spacecraft. It tells a comprehensive story from the first encounters with ENAs in the Earth's magnetosphere to Neutral-Atom Astronomy of the edge of the heliosphere and the interstellar medium. This story includes how ion mass spectrographs evolved into ENA imagers, overcoming the technical challenges, how to extract information from ENA data, and a variety of diagnostic applications on the magnetosphere, interplanetary space, other solar-system objects, the heliospheric boundary, the local interstellar medium, and a glimpse into the future of Neutral-Atom Astronomy. The authors hope to inform and inspire readers to further enrich this field of study.

The Heliosphere in the Local Interstellar Medium
Author: Rudolf von Steiger
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400917821

Languages : en
Pages : 408
Book Description
In summary, we can conclude that the contributions of the different ionization processes to the total ionization rate for the most abundant interstellar species are basically known. The ionization of the noble gases He and Ne is almost completely dominated by photoionization, whereas for H charge-exchange with the solar wind is most important. For other species, such as 0 and Ar, both processes contribute significantly. Electron impact ionization can typically contribute by '" 10% to the total rate in the inner Solar System. Because direct measurements of the solar EUV flux are not yet continuously available, the variation of the ionization rate over the solar cycle still contains a relatively large uncertainty. The recent measurements of pickup ion distributions and of the neutral helium gas provide an independent tool to determine the total ionization rate that can be used to cross calibrate with the results obtained for the individual ionization processes. Acknowledgements The authors are grateful to M. Allen for supplying us with new data on photoioniza tion cross-sections compiled by him. We thank also M. Gruntman for drawing our attention to and support in collecting the most recent data on charge-exchange cross-sections. D. R. was supported by grant No. 2 P03C. 004. 09 from the Com mittee for Scientific Research (Poland). This work was also supported in part through NASA contract NAS7-918, NSF Grant INT-911637, NASA Grant NAGW- 2579.
