Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star, Vol. 1: October, 1840 Let all the Elders remember the preface to Luke's gospel, and inas much as they also have a perfect understanding of those things which are daily occurring in their midst, let them write them as he did, and then, bye and bye, when the Lord will, there will be very little diliicdlty'in collect ing the histories of the different El ders, and of compiling them in one, thus forming a more full and explicit history of the Church in the last days than we have of the days of Christ and the Apostles. The gospels by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and J ohn are the histories of their lives, and of the things which they saw and heard, and of events which they were familiar with in their day; also, the Acts of the Apostles is a history of the Apostles; and this is the kind of his tory that we desire should be prepar ing concerning the servants and the work of God, at the present time. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: October 1, 1908 And now we come to the church which the Messiah, in fulfill ment of the prophecies of ancient prophets, has re-established in the earth in the latter days. Its founder, under God, was an ob scure youth, the son of a humble farmer; its members, like the first disciples of Christ, were from the ranks of the common people; its apostles and prophets were chosen, not for their great learning, for they were not learned men, but for their humility; it was organized 'on the 6th day of April, 1830, with six members: its first places of worship were the groves and little log cabins; it has been opposed by every sect in Christendom; the most bitter persecution has been heaped upon its members; they have been driven from pillar to post, their homes destroyed, their property confiscated, and many of them put to death. But notwithstanding all this the little stohe cut out of the mountain without hands has become a mountain; the grain of mustard seed has developed into a great tree; the Church of Jesus Christ 'of Latter-day Saints has become the envy of other churches. To-day it has a membership of about four hundred thousand; its missionaries are in almost all the nations of the earth, preaching the gospel of the kingdom freely; it has hundreds of large, magnificent places of worship; in fact, it has been pronounced the most remarkable religious organ ization of the age. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: February 6, 1913 A new work entitled, The Restoration of the Gospel, by Prof. Osborne J. P. Widtsoe, a.m., Principal of the Latter-day Saints' High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, has but recently issued from the Deseret News press. It was passed upon by a committee under appointment from the First Presidency, and therefore comes to the public strongly recommended. The following observation is made by Professor Widtsoe in his Foreword: The brief treatment of the Restoration of the Gospel herewith presented to the public is not intended to be in any wise a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is at most a story of the Restoration. It presumes at the outset that some thing has been restored. It relates how this something was restored. Every missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has met these two questions when he has preached abroad the Gospel of the restorati011: -what was restored? How was it restored? These two questions the follow ing chapters attempt to answer in part. It is but fair and just to say that he has handled the subject admirably. Many strong and convincing facts are skilfully woven together in chronological order, and prove beyond successful contradiction the need of a Restoration. While this is the particular and Special theme of the work, much valuable information is Contained in the chapters entitled, Sacred Writings of Old, A Sacred Book of To-day, The Gospel Brotherhood, A New and Everlasting Covenant, The Vision of Glories, In the Mouths of Witnesses, The Test of Section Sixty-seven. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: March 31, 1904 There have been a number of converts made who have joined themselves to adjacent stakes of Zion of which there are eight within the mission borders. Some members who have been slack in their duties have been persuaded to renew their diligence in the work. Many girls, who have drifted away from the Church and have married outside of its pale, have been found and their children have been blessed and baptized. In this way alone the establishment of the mission has done much good. The mission work has been and is still growing and, though few converts are being made, many have become warm friends and defenders of the Mormon Elders. Hospitality is characteristic of the people and the Elders have suffered little or no hardship when left to their mercy. God has abundantly blessed His servants in this mission. Comparatively few are met who give credence to the many stories which are being circulated about the Church. One old gentleman said to the writer the other day, If some of these people who are doing so much talking would go to Utah and see for themselves, as I have done, they would return with the notion that the Mormons are a pretty good people. Referring to the Senator Smoot agitation, he continued, Petitions are no guide to be governed by. I could go out and in a few hours get fifty names to a petition to hang a man. Liberality of thought and expression is everywhere heard. The people are willing to allow all others their own peculiar mode of worship and show no desire to molest them in it. They are content with the religion of their fathers and do not give themselves to worrying about their neighbors. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: June 4, 1914 So that, it appears distinctly that it is the young women who are most inclined to follow the outsider, and to become associated in marriage with non-believers, which is a pity. The number of members of the Church divorced during the year is 163; of this number 59 had been married in the temples, and 104 by civil ceremony. I think that here is a point Worthy of observation by the Latter day Saints. Men and women who become united in the holy bonds of wedlock, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, enter into that solemn relation ship with better understanding of the duties and responsibilities of marriage than others do, because they are taught more fully the facts in the case. There were excommunicated from the Church, in the stakes of Zion, 55 persons. Mostly, I suppose, for being carried away by every wind of doctrine. We have some foolish people who take up with any chimera, or foolish notion that anybody may advance to them. They are to be pitied. Baptisms into the Church, of children and adults, within the stakes, numbered 35 to the thousand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
