Book Description
Excerpt from The New Interpretation, or the Scriptures Viewed in the Light of Christian Science: Sermons The story of the gospels came at a time when the faith of men was ready to receive it. The world had waited for it. The immaculate conception of Jesus; His precocity in wisdom when a child; His marvelous under standing in riper years, unaided by tuition or association with the learned and thoughtful; His marvelous gift of healing and His power over material nature; His senten tious utterances of the highest spiritual truth; His undef served sufferings at the hands Of bigoted and malicious pietists; His violent death; His resurrection and final dis appearance from human sight, are the elements of a story which crept into the faith Of the world, because it served to solve the problems of being, which no philosophy or speculation of preceding times could solve. Men had lost all faith in mythologic legends. They had wearied of the theories of the origin and destiny Of man and his world, which were incapable Of proof or demonstration. Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Science in the Light of Holy Scripture If it did not come in the name of Christ, quote the Bible, use Christian nomenclature, and profess to be the faith once delivered to the saints, I would have paid no more attention to it than to other false religions of the earth. But just because it does come in the name of Christ, teaches in His name - and yet - denies all for which that name stands in Holy Writ; because it exalts a false Christ and preaches a false Christianity, I have sent forth this testimony of warning. Christian Science versus Pantheism and Other Messages to the Mother Church

Christian Science versus Pantheism and Other Messages to the Mother Church PDF Author: Mary Baker Eddy
Publisher: Library of Alexandria

Pages : 94

Book Description
According to Webster the word “pantheism” is derived from two Greek words meaning “all” and “god.” Webster's derivation of the English word “pantheism” is most suggestive. His uncapitalized word “god” gives the meaning of pantheism as a human opinion of “gods many,” or mind in matter. “The doctrine that the universe, conceived of as a whole, is God; that there is no God but the combined forces and laws which are manifested in the existing universe.” The Standard Dictionary has it that pantheism is the doctrine of the deification of natural causes, conceived as one personified nature, to which the religious sentiment is directed. Pan is a Greek prefix, but it might stand, in the term pantheism, for the mythological deity of that name; and theism for a belief concerning Deity in theology. However, Pan in imagery is preferable to pantheism in theology. The mythical deity may please the fancy, while pantheism suits not at all the Christian sense of religion. Pan, as a deity, is supposed to preside over sylvan solitude, and is a horned and hoofed animal, half goat and half man, that poorly presents the poetical phase of the genii of forests. My sense of nature's rich glooms is, that loneness lacks but one charm to make it half divine — a friend, with whom to whisper, “Solitude is sweet.” Certain moods of mind find an indefinable pleasure in stillness, soft, silent as the storm's sudden hush; for nature's stillness is voiced with a hum of harmony, the gentle murmur of early morn, the evening's closing vespers, and lyre of bird and brooklet.

Science and Hermeneutics

Science and Hermeneutics PDF Author: Vern S. Poythress

Book Description
"Many years ago, upon reading Thomas S. Kuhn's work "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions", I was taken aback by the obvious parallels between the subject of that book and the field of biblical exegesis. It seemed strange then-- and more so now after all these years-- that no one had sought to draw out the implications of Kuhn's ideas for better understanding the conflicts that frequently arise over the interpretation of Scripture." --(from the preface) In this new volume of the Foundation of Contemporary Interpretation series, Vern Poythress gives an explanation of the conflicts that often arise between science and the interpretation of Scripture. Novices and experts alike will be fascinated by the author's clear and perceptive account of the relationship between science and hermeneutics. Pythress' analysis will help students of the Bible appreciate the origin and nature of interpretive disputes, aid students in developing exegetical skills, and allow students to examine opposing views.
