Book Description
Illustrated with 200 photographs, all of which were taken by the author, this evocative book reveals developments in fishing boats built to the requirements of mostly Scottish fishermen from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s. Fishermen traditionally regard their boats as individuals and discuss their merits and peculiarities in critical detail. It is this strong, independent spirit which makes the Scottish fleet so lively and colourful and rich in diversity and quality. Though shapely cruiser-sterned wooden-hulled boats remained the favourites of many, the introduction of the transom stern was a radical departure in design, and there was also a colossal demand for steel vessels in the below-80ft section of the fleet. In fact the Scottish boats were so likeable that a number were built for owners in Ireland and the north-east of England too. Based on her original fieldwork, Gloria Wilson traces these changes and links them to the wider fishing industry in what was a turbulent era. These were times ol prosperity interspersed with downturns and sometimes tragedy, when several boats were lost at sea with all hands, and financial upheavals caused shipyard closures with half built vessels left on their slipways. Steadfast Boats and Fisher-People celebrates the author's deep regard for the fishing communities and their boats, which represented such a unique way of life. Book jacket.

Boatlines

Boatlines PDF Author: Ian Stephen
Publisher: Birlinn Ltd
ISBN: 1788855361
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 315

Book Description
People are drawn to the harbours and boats of Scotland whether they have a seafaring background or not. Why do boats take on different shapes as you follow the complex shorelines of islands and mainland? And why do the sails they carry appear to be so many shapes and sizes? Then there are rowing craft or power-driven vessels which can also be considered 'classics', whether they were built for work or leisure. As he traces the iconic forms of a selection of the boats of Scotland, Ian Stephen outlines the purposes of craft, past and present, to help gain a true understanding of this vital part of our culture. Sea conditions likely to be met and coastal geography are other factors behind the designs of a wide variety of craft. Stories go with boats. The vessels are not seen as bare artefacts without their own soul but more like living things.

Freshening Breezes

Book Description
"With dramatically diverse terrain and spectacular scenery, the Cleveland and North Yorkshire area has long had a strong fishing industry, and marine employment and pastimes remain common in the locality. All across this coastline, many places have supported small-scale artisanal fisheries and over time boats have evolved to cope with a variety of fishing techniques and local environmental conditions, as well as changing economic circumstances. This book tells the story of the fisher-folk, boats and builders along the storm-lashed stretch of north-east England between the rivers Tees and Esk in the mid to late twentieth century. Based on her original fieldwork, and including more than 170 stunning photographs, all taken by the author herself, as well as interviews with fishermen and boat builders, Gloria Wilson describes how these knowledgeable people maintained traditional values and yet were ready to try something new. From curiously shaped square-sterned cobles, via little 'double enders', right through so the stout, steel trawlers built locally in Whitby by one of Britain's foremost boatbuilding yards, Parkol Marine Engineering, all manner of boats are explored and pictured here. Whether for the beautiful photography or the fascinating information, this is a book no local or fishing enthusiast can do without"--Back cover.

The Cinema of Globalization

The Cinema of Globalization PDF Author: Tom Zaniello
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501711342
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Tom Zaniello's fascinating new guide to films about globalization—its origins, its relationship with colonialism, neocolonialism, the growth of migratory labor, and movements to counter or protest its adverse effects—offers readers and viewers the opportunity to both discover new films and see well-known works in a new way. From Afro@Digital to Zoolander, Zaniello discusses 201 films, including features such as The Constant Gardener, Dirty Pretty Things, and Syriana; documentaries and other nonfiction films such as Blue Vinyl, Darwin's Nightmare, and Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price; online films; and television productions. Zaniello casts a wide net to provide cinematic representations of globalization from all angles:-films about global labor and labor unions affected by globalization;-films about global capital and multinational corporations;-films about the transnational organizations (WB, IMF, WTO) most closely identified with globalization and global capital;-films about labor history and the daily life of working-class people as they relate to the development of globalization;-films about the environment directly related to changes in labor or capital; and-films about changes in both the workplace and the corporate office in the era of multinational corporations. Each entry in The Cinema of Globalization offers a summary of the main issues in the film and their relationship to globalization, sometimes a reference to the film's place in a director's work or tradition of cinema, and an often-opinionated assessment of the film's strengths and weaknesses. Like the best film guides, this book is an addictive reading experience full of ideas for future viewing. At the same time, it serves as an inviting and accessible introduction to a difficult topic—the central themes and aspects of globalization. To read Tom Zaniello's blog on the cinema of labor and globalization, featuring even more reviews, visit http://tzaniello.wordpress.com.
