Essays on the Political Economy of Rural Africa

Essays on the Political Economy of Rural Africa PDF Author: Robert H. Bates
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520060148
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 195

Book Description
The essays in this volume represent a dialogue between theory and data. The theory is drawn from a branch of contemporary political economy which can also be labeled the collective-choice school. The data are drawn from Africa. The book extends the methods of reasoning developed in collective choice from their original base-the advanced industrial democracies-to new territory; the literature on rural Africa. Such as extension challenges the power of this form of political economy. It also enriches it, for the central questions which motivate the contemporary study of political economy are often addressed with unique clarity in the scholarship on rural Africa.

States and Power in Africa

States and Power in Africa PDF Author: Jeffrey Herbst
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 9780691010281
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
Theories of international relations, assumed to be universally applicable, have failed to explain the creation of states in Africa. There, the interaction of power and space is dramatically different from what occurred in Europe. In his groundbreaking book, Jeffrey Herbst places the African state-building process in a truly comparative perspective, examining the problem of state consolidation from the precolonial period, through the short but intense interlude of European colonialism, to the modern era of independent states. Herbst's bold contention--that the conditions now facing African state-builders existed long before European penetration of the continent--is sure to provoke controversy, for it runs counter to the prevailing assumption that colonialism changed everything. In identifying how the African state-building process differs from the European experience, Herbst addresses the fundamental problem confronting African leaders: how to extend authority over sparsely settled lands. Indeed, efforts to exert control over vast, inhospitable territories of low population density and varied environmental and geographical zones have resulted in devastating wars, millions of refugees, and dysfunctional governments perpetrating destructive policies. Detailing the precise political calculations of distinct African leaders, Herbst isolates the basic dynamics of African state development. In analyzing how these leaders have attempted to consolidate power, he is able to evaluate a variety of policy alternatives for dealing with the fundamental political challenges facing African states today.

The Political Economy of Pondoland 1860-1930

The Political Economy of Pondoland 1860-1930 PDF Author: William Beinart
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521099554
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This book examines in detail how the people of one formerly independent African chiefdom were absorbed into the wider South African society during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first two chapters discuss the nature of the pre-colonial polity, changes in agricultural production during the early stages of colonisation, colonial policy and the beginnings of mass labour migrancy up to about 1910. The last three chapters, focusing on the period between about 1910 and 1930, analyse changing patterns of rural production and labour migrancy, the changing form of African homesteads, the position of chiefs in rural South African and new patterns of rural differentiation. The book questions some of the assumptions in the literature on 'underdevelopment' in Africa.
