Excerpt from The Register, or Rolls, of Walter Gray, Lord Archbishop of York: With Appendices of Illustrative Documents Wm Gnu, the register of whose oflicisl acts is here presented to the Surtees Society, was Archbishop of York from 1215 to 1255, and had a longer tenure of his exalted position than any of his predecessors or successors. It is a most rare occurrence in the annals of any branch of the Church for a prelate to wear the mitts for forty years. I need not recapitulate here the chief events in his private and public life, which, as far as they are known, are given in detail elsewhere.' In this volume we regard him as an ecclesiastical ruler, and scrutinise the manner in which, during a long series of years, he administered the afl'airs of one of the two great provinces of the English Church.
