Towards the Future of Surgery

Towards the Future of Surgery PDF Author: Jacopo Martellucci
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783031476228
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The book provides an overview of the characteristics and skills – both technical and soft - needed to become the surgical leaders of tomorrow. During the COVID pandemic, the methodological weakness in accessing and disseminating information in has become evident: this has fostered the digital development and has favoured the creation of networks and communities of individuals (not only physicians or surgeons) pointing the way to global knowledge sharing. The development of the technological offer applied to surgery has been very rapid, with the integration of minimally invasive and robotic surgery with artificial intelligence and computerization of decision-making processes, up to the extreme limit of space surgery. However, in the future of this discipline surgeons will no longer need to consider only improved access to knowledge and evolution of technology, as a great challenge will be represented by the parallel development of non-technical skills (leadership, communication, team-working) and by the careful application of healthcare management principles to clinical practice. Finally, in the near future (but already in the present), it will be impossible to ignore the economic impact of high-tech care and equity in access to care. The book describes a journey, which starts from the history of surgical education to cross the most relevant perspectives of present and future, exploring new learning models, the thousand applications of artificial intelligence, and surgical technology to the space and back.

Surgery, Past Present and Future

Surgery, Past Present and Future PDF Author: Spencer Wells
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330347577
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 54

Book Description
Excerpt from Surgery, Past Present and Future: And Excessive Mortality After Surgical Operations; Two Addresses to the British Medical Association; 1864& 1877 Mr. President and Gentlemen - When I received from the President of the Council of this great Association the unanimous request of the Committee of Council that I would deliver this Address, and was further assured that I was thus invited at the suggestion of a deputation from Manchester, I felt that any hesitation on my part might appear ungrateful, or as if I did not appreciate a great honour. So, without wasting your time by apologies, and simply thanking you for the exceeding kindness of your greetsing to-day, I will ask you to consider with me how, as an Association, how in each of our branches, how, individually as well as collectively, every one of us may assist in the advancement of the Surgery of the Future; how the art and science of the present, which we have received from our forefathers and our teachers, and as far as we could have improved, may be so handed down that our followers, taught by our success, warned by our failures, knowing where our knowledge is defective, our methods faulty, may so work and so observe that in each succeeding year surgery may become more perfect as an art, more exact as a science, and more honourable as a profession. Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Healthcare

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Healthcare PDF Author: Jon-Arild Johannessen
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040090540
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 136

Book Description
The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector is certain to boost levels of automation and productivity but, paradoxically, it will also increase the availability of “first line competence.” At the same time as demographic trends are affecting demand for health and social care, the technological developments we are seeing make it highly likely that AI will play a decisive role in tackling the challenges our healthcare systems will encounter. This book reveals systemic connections to tackle questions about the potential impact of AI on future challenges in the healthcare sector. Specifically, it develops practical proposals for ways in which AI can be applied to solve these forthcoming issues. It emphasizes the importance of AI in what is known in the literature as human augmentation. The book’s innovative perspective is apparent in the way it challenges conventional wisdom in the context of several pressing questions, such as: • What opportunities and challenges could arise from the application of AI in the healthcare sector? • How can the philosophy of medicine, viewed from a systemic perspective, help us to understand, explain, and resolve some of the future challenges in the healthcare sector? • How could AI affect inclusive employment opportunities for people with disabilities? The book also contains an underlying argument to the effect that the rational approach adopted by economists is perhaps less rational when applied to a healthcare sector that is crying out for more “first line competence.” The primary readership will be academic, but the book will also appeal to policymakers, consultants, HR departments, healthcare stakeholders, and related practitioners.

Digital Surgery

Digital Surgery PDF Author: Sam Atallah
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030491005
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 441

Book Description
This book provides a trove of insightful perspectives on the current state and the realization of digital surgery. Digital surgery entails the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning toward automation in robotic-assisted surgery. More generally, the objective is to digitally define the patient, the surgical field, and the surgical problem or task at hand; to operate based on information, rather than based on anatomic planes alone. But digital surgery has shapeshifted into other, equally intriguing faces – many of which are exemplified by topics throughout this book. Digital surgery is fundamental to 3D-printed organs, mind-controlled limbs, image-guided navigation, and tele-mentoring. It is the key that unlocks the metaphorical doorway to surgical access, thereby creating a global framework for surgical training, education, planning, and much more. This text provides methods of measurement and perception outside of the human umwelt – including the ability to visualize fields beyond the visible light spectrum, via near infrared fluorescent organic dyes which are rapidly being bioengineered to target specific tumors, as well as native anatomic structures of interest. Written by experts in the field, Digital Surgery is designed to help surgeons operate with an enriched understanding of an individual’s specific attributes: including the human phenome, physiome, microbiome, genome, and epigenome. It also aids surgeons in harnessing the power and fluidity of the cloud, which is emerging as a significant resource for surgeons both regionally and globally.
