Qawa'id Fi Ulum al-Hadith (Principles of Hadith)

Qawa'id Fi Ulum al-Hadith (Principles of Hadith) PDF Author: Mawlana Zafar Ahmed Al Uthmani
Publisher: Turath Publishing
ISBN: 190694928X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
The importance of hadith as the basis of Islamic law, theology, and ethics cannot be underestimated. Alongside the Quran, it constitutes the second source of Islamic shariah and one's practice. While no Muslim will challenge the authority of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) as many have differing views with regards to ascertaining exactly what the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said and did. This difference is a consequence of the diverse methodologies employed in establishing the normative practices of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). The spectrum of ideas and opinions encompasses the entire scope of thought from outright rejection of hadith to a highly literal reading of it. This translation provides yet another approach to understanding hadith. The translated text is the introduction to a large multi-volume work in Arabic called I'la as-Sunan. The original work was a response to the Ahle hadith allegation that the school of Imam Abu Hanifah is deprived of hadith. In this introduction, the author pens his methodology for writing the I'la as-Sunan. The author endeavors to deconstruct the false understanding that hadith science is absolute and fixed. He argues that since the science of hadith is not prescriptive in the shariah, no one group can lay claim to it or claim a universal understanding of it. This book will be of interest to students who have a penchant for abstract theories and methods and to advanced students of hadith and Islamic thoughts. About the Author Mawlana Zafar Ahmad al-Uthmani, the illustrious nephew of Hakim al-Ummah Mawlana Ashraf Ali at-Thanawi was born on 13 Rabi al-Awwal 1310/1892. Allah bestowed him with a remarkable memory and at a tender age he memorized the Holy Quran. From the age of seven, he was studying mathematics, Persian, and Urdu with Mawlana Yasin, the father of Mufti Shafi. He studied the Islamic sciences under various teachers including his maternal uncle Hakim al-Ummah in both Thana Bhawan as well as Kanpur. After receiving a license in the sacred and rational sciences, he went to the Islamic seminary Mazahir Ulum and became a student of the hadith master and Gnostic Mawlana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri. He received his license to teach hadith at the young age of 18. He then became a professor of Islamic sciences in various institutions including his alma mater Mazahir Ulum and Imdad al-Ulum in Thana Bhawan. He is the author of many books on the sacred sciences of which the I'la as-Sunan is his magnum opus.

Pages : 465

Book Description
The classic translation of the Koran by a convert to Islam In 1930, Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall, a Western Islamic scholar and convert to Islam, published this English translation of the Koran, the central religious text of Islam, which the Times Literary Supplement lauded as “a great literary achievement.” The aim of this work is to present to American readers what Muslims the world over hold to be the meaning of the words of the Koran, and the nature of that Book, accurately and concisely, with a view to the requirements of English-speaking Muslims. The first English translation of the Koran by an Englishman who is a Muslim, the Book is here rendered almost literally, and every effort has been made to choose befitting language. Regarded by Muslims as God’s actual words revealed to the prophet Mohammed, the Koran remains the supreme authority of the Islamic tradition. Comprising laws, moral precepts, and narratives, its timeless texts are the inspiration and guide of millions of Muslims. With this remarkably readable and scholarly translation, Pickthall introduces the sacred scriptures of the Koran to Western readers—and provides invaluable and fascinating insight into one of the world’s great religions.

If the Oceans Were Ink

If the Oceans Were Ink PDF Author: Carla Power
Publisher: Holt Paperbacks
ISBN: 0805098240
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • Hailed by The Washington Post as “mandatory reading,” and praised by Fareed Zakaria as “intelligent, compassionate, and revealing,” a powerful journey to help bridge one of the greatest divides shaping our world today. If the Oceans Were Ink is Carla Power's eye-opening story of how she and her longtime friend Sheikh Mohammad Akram Nadwi found a way to confront ugly stereotypes and persistent misperceptions that were cleaving their communities. Their friendship-between a secular American and a madrasa-trained sheikh-had always seemed unlikely, but now they were frustrated and bewildered by the battles being fought in their names. Both knew that a close look at the Quran would reveal a faith that preached peace and not mass murder; respect for women and not oppression. And so they embarked on a yearlong journey through the controversial text. A journalist who grew up in the Midwest and the Middle East, Power offers her unique vantage point on the Quran's most provocative verses as she debates with Akram at cafes, family gatherings, and packed lecture halls, conversations filled with both good humor and powerful insights. Their story takes them to madrasas in India and pilgrimage sites in Mecca, as they encounter politicians and jihadis, feminist activists and conservative scholars. Armed with a new understanding of each other's worldviews, Power and Akram offer eye-opening perspectives, destroy long-held myths, and reveal startling connections between worlds that have seemed hopelessly divided for far too long. Praise for If the Oceans Were Ink “A vibrant tale of a friendship.... If the Oceans Were Ink is a welcome and nuanced look at Islam [and] goes a long way toward combating the dehumanizing stereotypes of Muslims that are all too common.... If the Oceans Were Ink should be mandatory reading for the 52 percent of Americans who admit to not knowing enough about Muslims.”—The Washington Post “For all those who wonder what Islam says about war and peace, men and women, Jews and gentiles, this is the book to read. It is a conversation among well-meaning friends—intelligent, compassionate, and revealing—the kind that needs to be taking place around the world.”—Fareed Zakaria, author of The Post-American World “Carla Power’s intimate portrait of the Quran, told with nuance and great elegance, captures the extraordinary, living debate over the Muslim holy book’s very essence. A spirited, compelling read.”—Azadeh Moaveni, author of Lipstick Jihad “Unique, masterful, and deeply engaging. Carla Power takes the reader on an extraordinary journey in interfaith understanding as she debates and discovers the Quran’s message, meaning, and values on peace and violence, gender and veiling, religious pluralism and tolerance.”—John L. Esposito, University Professor and Professor of Islamic Studies, Georgetown University, and author of The Future of Islam “A thoughtful, provocative, intelligent book.”—Diana Abu-Jaber, author of Birds Of Paradise and The Language of Baklava
