A House of Prayer for All People

A House of Prayer for All People PDF Author: David K. Seitz
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 1452955581
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 375

Book Description
Perhaps an unlikely subject for an ethnographic case study, the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto in Canada is a large predominantly LGBT church with a robust, and at times fraught, history of advocacy. While the church is often riddled with fault lines and contradictions, its queer and faith-based emphasis on shared vulnerability leads it to engage in radical solidarity with asylum-seekers, pointing to the work of affect in radical, coalition politics. A House of Prayer for All People maps the affective dimensions of the politics of citizenship at this church. For nearly three years, David K. Seitz regularly attended services at MCCT. He paid special attention to how community and citizenship are formed in a primarily queer Christian organization, focusing on four contemporary struggles: debates on race and gender in religious leadership, activism around police–minority relations, outreach to LGBT Christians transnationally, and advocacy for asylum seekers. Engaging in debates in cultural geography, queer of color critique, psychoanalysis, and affect theory, A House of Prayer for All People stages innovative, reparative encounters with citizenship and religion. Building on queer theory’s rich history of “subjectless” critique, Seitz calls for an “improper” queer citizenship—one that refuses liberal identity politics or national territory as the ethical horizon for sympathy, solidarity, rights, redistribution, or intimacy. Improper queer citizenship, he suggests, depends not only on “good politics” but also on people’s capacity for empathy, integration, and repair.

Praying Together

Praying Together PDF Author: Megan Hill
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433550547
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 111

Book Description
Nearly all Christians would affirm the centrality of prayer for a healthy Christian life. And yet, for many, prayer is often a challenge, requiring intense personal commitment and self-discipline. However, as Megan Hill points out in Praying Together, our normal approach to prayer leaves out a crucial component: other people. While personal prayer is important, God designed the church to be a community of believers who regularly pray together. Exploring the Bible's rich teaching on what it means to gather at God's throne with one voice, Hill lays a theological foundation for corporate prayer and offers practical guidance for making it a reality—in our families, churches, and communities.

A House of Prayer

A House of Prayer PDF Author: Thomas R. Steagald
Publisher: Upper Room Books
ISBN: 0835813231
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
A House of Prayer begins with a personal story: a moment of a deep sense of isolation and spiritual distress that gives way to a deep sense of abiding connectedness and community. That movement from isolation to serenity by means of praying together, spiritually or physically, is the emphasis of this book. Steagald believes that praying together allows the church to become "one," as Jesus intended, and the "Body" St. Paul described. The author incorporates memoir, travelogue, reflection on scripture, church history, and psychology as he builds a compelling case for congregations to put more focus on praying as a community.

Make Your City a House of Prayer

Make Your City a House of Prayer PDF Author: Lynn Ferder
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1512705241
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
This book explores the pastor-intercessor relationship in making our city a house of prayer by suggesting ways to rethink how we can interact with cross-denominational leadership, opening the way for unity to flourish. Additionally, we provide guidelines for appropriate altar ministry and corporate prayer settings, prayers for youth and children, and tools for writing your own prayers addressing the mission and vision statement of your own, or other, ministries. We also address the business aspect of starting a ministry and walk the reader through the process of taking a small prayer group from the home into the community and making your city a house of prayer. “Any book with a title like Make Your City a House of Prayer begs to be read! We in the USA are such an independent, individualistic bunch and often suffer from not praying and working together to advance His Kingdom in our cities and nation. Such heart unity, my colleagues and I have observed in many national prayer initiatives, is what facilitates the breakthroughs and transformations of the Lord even in impossible, discouraging, oppressive situations. We do need the kind of paradigm that Lynn Ferder shares in her book. She has much experience in personally living out this paradigm and in training many others to do so. Her guidelines for corporate, united prayer and the place of children and youth will also be extremely valuable. I heartily endorse this book and its wonderful theme. May it catch on across our nation and in other nations as well!” —John Robb, chairman, International Prayer Connect

A House of Prayer for All Peoples

A House of Prayer for All Peoples PDF Author: Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1566994578
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
Contrary to the oft-repeated truism, there are churches in America where Sunday is not the "most segregated day of the week," as Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook convincingly demonstrates in her compelling exploration of congregations tackling racial justice issues. Yet the truism continues to haunt many congregations, and Kujawa-Holbrook reveals, through story and thoughtful analysis, what it means to create and live out multiracial community. Focusing on six congregations from different denominations, geographical regions, and settings, the author shows us the joys and struggles in their intentional pursuits of a more diverse and just community. The stories in A House of Prayer for All Peoples will inspire leaders to explore their congregation's history, study their community's demographics, and, most of all, search their souls for ways they can develop and celebrate the diversity in their midst. The book is capped by an extensive annotated resource list for readers who want to explore the topic further.
