Europe Today and Tomorrow

Europe Today and Tomorrow PDF Author: Pope Benedict XVI
Publisher: Ignatius Press
ISBN: 1586171348
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 121

Book Description
Written in late 2004, Ratzinger raises serious questions about the issues facing Europe amidst the new European Union and forming of a European Constitution. Some of the main issues he raises include: How did Europe originate and what are its boundaries? Who has the right to call himself European and be admitted into the new Eurpoe? What about the spiritual roots of Europe and the moral foundation she is founded on? Ratzinger sees the lack of focus on these fundamental questions in the forming of a new Europe as a very serious dilemma for the furture of Europe, and the world.

Towards an Imperfect Union

Towards an Imperfect Union PDF Author: Dalibor Rohac
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1442270659
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 203

Book Description
In today’s Europe, deep cracks are showing in the system of political cooperation that was designed to prevent the geopolitical catastrophes that ravaged the continent in the first half of the twentieth century. Europeans are haunted, once again, by the specters of nationalism, fascism, and economic protectionism. Instead of sounding the alarm, many conservatives have become cheerleaders for the demise of the European Union (EU). This compelling book represents the first systematic attempt to justify the European project from a free-market, conservative viewpoint. Although many of their criticisms are justified, Dalibor Rohac contends that Euroskeptics are playing a dangerous game. Their rejection of European integration places them in the unsavory company of nationalists, left-wing radicals, and Putin apologists. Their defense of the nation-state against Brussels, furthermore, is ahistorical. He convincingly shows that the flourishing of democracy and free markets in Europe has gone hand in hand with the integration project. Europe’s pre-EU past, in contrast, was marked by a series of geopolitical calamities. When British voters make their decision in June, they should remember that while Brexit would not be a political or economic disaster for the United Kingdom, it would not solve any of the problems that the “Leavers” associate with EU membership. Worse yet, its departure from the European Union would strengthen the centrifugal forces that are already undermining Europe's ability to solve the multitude of political, economic, and security challenges plaguing the continent today. Instead of advocating for the end of the EU, Rohac argues that conservatives must come to the rescue of the integration project by helping to reduce the EU’s democratic deficit and turning it into an engine of economic dynamism and prosperity. Europe Today

Europe Today PDF Author: Erik Jones
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1538110946

Languages : en
Pages : 509

Book Description
Now in its sixth edition, Europe Today presents unrivaled coverage of developments in major European countries and across the region. Each chapter builds on a foundation of basic political information and explanation to develop distinctive and thought-provoking contributions to current debates. Informative and engaging, this comprehensive text leads readers toward a coherent and informed view of Europe today.

The Other Heading

The Other Heading PDF Author: Jacques Derrida
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 9780253316936
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Like a navigator, Derrida sets out from a Europe that has always defined itself as the capital of culture, the headland of thought, in whose name and for whose benefit exploration of other lands, other peoples, and other ways of thinking has been carried out. If such Eurocentric biases are not to be repeated, Derrida warns, the question of Europe must be asked in a new way; it must be asked by recalling another heading. Not only is it necessary for Europe to be responsible for the other, but its own identity is actually constituted by the other. Rejecting the easy or programmatic solutions of Euruocentrism or anti-Eurocentrism, of total unification or complete dispersion, Derrida argues for the necessity of working with and from the Enlightenment values of liberal democracy while at the same time recalling that these values do not themselves ensure respect for the other.

English in Europe Today

English in Europe Today PDF Author: Annick De Houwer
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027287341
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
This volume discusses several facets of English in today's multilingual Europe. It emphasizes the interdependence between cultures, languages and situations that influence its use. This interdependence is particularly relevant to European settings where English is being learned as a second language. Such learning situations constitute the core focus of the book. The volume is unique in bringing together empirical studies examining factors that promote the learning of English in Europe. Rather than assuming that English is a threat to linguistic diversity and cultural independence, these studies discuss psycholinguistic factors such as the input, and sociolinguistic factors such as the type of English that is targeted in learning. The contributing authors are well-established specialists who have worked on multilingualism, English as a Lingua Franca and second language acquisition. The book will be of interest to applied linguists, sociolinguists and teachers of English as a foreign language.

The Dark Side of Europe

The Dark Side of Europe PDF Author: Geoff Harris
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
Fascism cannot be treated as an isolated historical or political phenomenon, relevant only to certain countries at certain times. In the difficult economic and social circumstances of the 1970s and 1980s old ideas have found a new audience, and whilst democracy may not face an immediate challenge, a considered approach to racism and fascism will be needed if the new Europe of the 1990s is not to provide an opportunity for a pan-European extreme right revival. Racism, the rewriting of history, the new right, terrorism and secret service corruption are looked at comparatively. For the first time in English a detailed analysis of the Le Pen phenomenon in France and extreme right terrorism in Italy is offered; the similarities with developments in other European countries are brought out. The author provides detailed inside knowledge of how the European institutions have responded and looks at some of the implications for society and politics of the 1992 project and the continuation of immigration into Western Europe.
